Axle Pivot Bushing too loose in bracket?

Stock TTB/TIB down travel is usually limited by the bushings binding up. Usually the radius arm bushings. To fit 2” leveling coils in on a stock suspension I had to stand on the hub and pull on the fender to get enough room with the shock disconnected plus someone to handle the springs. Stock TTB just doesn’t move enough to be a problem.

+1

I had to push down on the spindle pretty hard with everything unhooked to even remove the spring. Brakes/shocks are nowhere close to being downtravel limits.

Not all 91's and 92's come with a D35.

My dad has a '92 that has a D28. It is a supercab truck that has a 2.9, A4LD and a 7.5. Pretty much ALL of the undesirable drivetrain options... and power windows, power locks, etc... and it's red, on red, on red, on red. I hate that truck but it has refused to die so far.

Just as another fun example... you would think that truck being heavier would have got a D35... but I also had a 1991 single cab, short box, 4x4 with a 4 cylinder, with power steering and NO other options, that had a D35 in the front. And 4.10 gears!!!
Is he the original owner?

Because I researched this once before years ago when someone else said the same thing.
There was not a Dana Spicer BOM # for a D28 for '91 or '92, only the D35.

No, he's not the original owner. I don't know if the guy he got it from was either. I suppose it's possible that it had collision damage or something and was fixed with older parts... I have no idea.

Ok so it sounds like I don't need to worry about the spring hold-down clamps being bottomed-out!

Another question: When doing the above subject suspension upgrade, I purchased the steering linkage intended for the D35 but ended up installing a D28 temporarily. Everything is installed but I cannot seem to get the tires near proper alignment. With adjustment sleeves tightened up all the way (ie: cannot shorten the linkage on either side anymore) I still cannot get the tires parallel, too much toe-out. Is the steering linkage the same for the D35 and D28 axles? Or are they different parts, with the D28 linkage being a bit shorter overall?

The D28 is about an inch narrower than the D35 so that is a possibility. Are the steering links and tie rod ends touching in the middle? I'm pretty sure you should be able to make this work but it's been a bit since this has come up... On the threaded collars they're cheap and easier to find than anything else if the TRE's aren't bottoming against the link I'd take say 1/8" off of each end but I wouldn't shorten the TRE's or links... I think there should be room to shorten the collars...

I think you get close to running out of thread but you can go the other way, D28 linkage on a D35 in a pinch. I have never heard of anyone even trying this. But the D35 to D28 swaps are not very common either...

Yeah you probably don't see this swap very often but was in a pinch and need the truck. To answer Scotts90Ranger: yes. The steering links and tie rod ends are touching and need to come in a bit more. Looks like I may need to pull out the linkage/tie rod end assembly and try to shorten it a bit...
