I am wondering if anybody has done a rebuild themselves and if yes then what did it cost you.

just trying to figure out which way to go.

Thanks! Rick

you should probably specify if you're looking at a performance build or to salvage a blown motor back to stock, the two will be vastly different

Even what is wrong, why it's needs rebuilt is going to make a big difference in cost.

Do it yourself

It costs a lot a blood and busted knuckles-a few choice curse words and around $1000 but the best thing is knowing exactly what is done from the crank grind to the camshaft specs and which company bearings are used- always the best please. The best gasket sets- mix and match. You get to choose your machine shop. You can weigh out your pistons and rods and match appropriately. All things a long block engine assembler AIN'T going to do.

Thank for your input. The plan is just a stock rebuild. It sounds like a bearing rattle.

I got a quote on a Jasper short block for $1600. I might go that way.

At least with a reman engine many times it will have some kind of warranty. I know of more than one engine that's blown when it was first started. Most times just error on the builders part.

I didn't know people were still rebuilding their 2.9's heheheh!!!

whats wrong with building a 2.9? where can u get performance parts?

Rebuilding an engine that was discontinued NINETEEN years ago that had "issues" that were never entirely resolved in it's six year production run and was replaced by a far superior engine and you ask what's wrong with rebuilding one?

Where to get performance parts? You can't because quite simply none exsist.

Except either stuff that doesn't really improve anything (ignition coils)
or parts that cost far out of proportion to the gains (JBA headers)

AllanD. Are you saying the 4.0 is was superior or the 3.0? If you are speaking of the 4.0 I would love to do that upgrade but I really like the dash in the first gen. I know you can mod the old dash but really it seems out of my ability. I also would love a 5.0 but I am also worried about the time and money to make the change from the 2.9.

When I started this post I was researching a plan on how to move forward. My current plan is to buy a reman 2.9 from Hiperformance. All in I am guessing it will be be about $2K with me doing the work.

I would love to hear your feedback on my "plan".
