Automatic whining noise

I pulled out on the road, and accelerated, and transmission just quit.it made a whirring noise and just coasted. Got it pulled home, less than a mile, it felt like it was dragging a bit. Fluid and filter have been changed. Cracked the line at the radiator and fluid blew out pretty fast. When it's on and in gear now, it doesn't move, but the whirring noise is still there and increases when the engine is revved up. But the truck doesn't move at all. Idle speed changes when it's put into any gear. My guess is torque converter. The truck is an 88 Ranger extended cab 2wd automatic with the 2.9 motor.

Does the fluid level on the dipstick drop when you start the engine?

I know this is a really dumb question, but I’m just trying to think of best case scenarios. Have you checked the yoke shaft coming out of the back of the trans to see if it’s snapped inside the tail? I know it’s a million-to-one shot that it would be that easy. The yoke’s prolly stronger than anything else in there...

By the way, how did the old fluid look? Any chunks of metal, gear teeth, etc? Hope it’s something less-than-terrible and that someone here with more trans experience can help you get back on the road. :icon_thumby:

I will check for fluid level change and check the yolk shaft in the morning, filter wasn't bad, fluid looked pretty good too, no chunks, no burned smell.

Ahh the tranny shop's best friend the A4LD...time for a rebuild, replacement tranny, or new truck.

Slow your roll there Billy boy. I am thinking it may have spit enough fluid out that the pump lost it's prime.
