i got stuck in snow with my 1994 2WD 4.0 L ranger and you know how it goes back and forth back and forth back and forth well after getting out to put wood under the tires i noticed the coolant was boiling ok time to turn it off. and an hour later i started it back up put it in gear and it goes no where any gear other then park is like neutral did i blow the trans or is there any kind of relay that shuts the trans down when it over heats and also the electric shift fuse is missing would that have anything to do with it? thanks

did you check the fluid? did it leak into the radiator? is it black and smelly?

you could have fried the clutches/bands inside the transmission with all the back and forth

fluid seemed over full but clean no metal in it and it was bright red as normal. is there some way that coolant could get in? cause like i said its way over full

yes, the radiator has trans fluid flow through it. if it leaks internally you can end up with trans fluid in the coolant or coolant in the trans fluid.

oh i got you cause it was over heating and started steaming oh ok im hoping its just the rad and not the trans. ill drain the rad and trans and put new fluid in the trans but whats the best way to test the rad to see if its leaking to the trans fluid? and i was thinking the trans couldnt have been gone cause the last trans i blew on a saturn park gear wouldnt work and park gear still works and there was no bang or anything like when the saturn trans went.

ok i just wanted to say thanks so very much for saving me from taking out the trans tomorrow i took some trans oil out put it on the work bench and then i saw the water beads rise up new fluid in new rad and drain and flush the trans and put new fluid and i should be ready to go right? thanks!!!!!

water does not rise in oil. it stays at the bottom.

to check for oil/water mixing just look in the radiator it will usually be pink milkshake looking after it was running.

losing park is not the same as burning the clutches in the transmission. the saturn you talk about probalby had a broken park pawl or misadjusted linkage.

i recommend removing the transmission oil pan and examine the fluid that comes out, examine and replace the filter and check inside the pan for metal/black sludge

fluid is clean pan is clean wheres the filter and i can get a trans for $150 do i just do that? if so can i change the trans out the bottom without taking the motor out? how big of job is it? i have changed a motor and trans in a car before and i dont feel like doing that again but if i can drop the trans out the bottom about the only thing i have to unhook would be the linkage and a few wires insted of EVERYTHING on the motor. thanks

The filter is on the bottom of the trans, inside the pan. You just drop the pan and it's right in front of you, pull it off, replace filter, torque pan back on, and refill trans with fluid. It's a really simple job.

could that make the trans not work at all? like drive 4321 and R act like N

I would unhook 1 of the trans, lines and put it in a bucket and start the engine ffor JUST a few seconds and see if it is pumping fluid. since the fluid is showing "over full" could mean the pump has gone south. .. no pump .. no move!

If you are pumping fluid .. check your linkage. Your truck has a cable from the shifter to the trans, I have seen them break or the piece of plastic that holds it in place will let the sleave move. CHECK the linkage out good and make sure its moving the lever on the trans when someone is moving the shifter.!

Unlikely, just answering your question from before.

yes. it could, been there, found a totally clogged filter and it turned my non moving transmission into a semi-functioning late shifting hunk of junk.. it was a gm product so thats normal.

but in this case we can't be sure until the OP checks. whoever mentioned a pump and linkage is right too

i wouldn't spend any time/money on another trans until you diagnose what you have, it could be a 25cent bolt that fell off the linkage

already checked the linkage at the time of being stuck its working normal. i guess ill check the pump next.

prepare for mess if the pump is working and don't run it very long
this happened to my 3.0l once apon a time
