Auto tranny :(

Hello

Look at 4.0l 4WD Rangers from 90-94 and AWD Areostars with the 4.0l. They are much stronger. While you have it out put a shift correction kit into it. My 85 B2 has that and I am happy.

Whats a shift correction kit ??:icon_confused:

Also I tryed the raising the back tires up and then shifting into d,2,1,r,n, it does nothing, wont spin the tires, or anything.

Hello

A shift correction kit will engage the gears faster without slipping so much. Much firmer shifts. Less slipping means less heat being made. Also look at getting a bigger transmission cooler. I used one from a 94 AWD Areostar and it does a good job. Some guys on here and other Ford sites will say to goto a RV cooler. In my 85 B2 its transmission out to top of rad out of bottom of rad to Areostar cooler then to the Areostar PS cooler back to the transmission. So far so good. I also use an E-Fan (2 speed) from a Caravan with the relay box out of an areostar. Here is my right up http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36762&highlight=e-fan . It helps it to stay cool in +30 C weather.

Then something in the trans. is probably blown to shit. If it were worn clutch packs or worn down band friction surfaces, it would slip horribly but would at least move the wheels while under no load. Hows the rear end on it? If it's looking worn, an 8.8 may not be a bad pick up while at the yard.

Mr99Ranger, is there another or better Auto trans I could use even if I have to drop the 4x4 out and run 2x4, that would be a close bolt on??

thank you

Robert

Maybe, and I stress MAYBE a c-3 will work. If it does, though, it's non od so expect gas mileage to drop by a few mpg. Also, good luck finding one in a 4x4 tailhousing. I'd just suggest going with either a 4 liter a4ld, or, If you're up to it, a toyo kogo 5 speed or an m50d. YOu should really just go with the 4.0 a4ld. If treated well, it'll serve you for a good, long while.Oh, and if you've got a hitch or plow mount on the bII, remove it so you're not tempted. Bad things happen to a4ld's when you try to tow or plow with them.

you can fit a C5 automatic, they make it in 4x4. or just find an A4, things are a dime a dozen.

thanks guys, if the weather holds up the weekend, I'm going to Pull-a-parts in knoxville and try to find a a4ld out of an explorer first, then a bronco ii, and then a ranger.

if all is lost, I got an offer for a a4ld out of a mustang for 200.00, I guess I could use it and just get rid of the 4x4 parts, and then lower it.

Don't remove 4x4. Just swap the tailhousings. They're real cheap anyways. Keep it a 4x4, though.

I thought someone before said the tail shaft was a diffrent length, and I would have to take the trans apart to make the 4x4 tail work on a 2x4 trans !?!

You can not just swap the tail housings to make a 2wd trans into a 4wd. You have to tear down the trans and change the output shaft also.

if you get one from a junkyard, id find out why the vehicle is at the junkyard. i wouldnt grab an auto from a junk vehicle unless it was a wreck or obvious engine damage. those autos blow up constantly.

I figured he'd be able to tear down the transmission as he does seem to be somewhat mechanically inclined. If he is, however, then that begs the question, why not try and rebuild it with a ford factory manual. You can buy one on the web, and If you do it yourself You know whats going in to your transmission is decent parts.
