Ahh, a new forum. All I have to say at the moment is that I've taken the Auto Train to FL and back 11 times now so if anyone has any questions, I'll be happy to help.
The basics are that it runs non-stop between Lorton, VA, which is just south of D.C., and Sanford, FL, which is on I-4 halfway between Daytona and Orlando. Check in by 3:00 I think, train leaves at 4:30 and gets into FL at 8:30 the next morning. Same deal going back north. Nice relaxing trip, watch the scenery go by, movies and beer in the lounge car. Dinner and breakfast are included and the food is great. You ride in a passenger rail car and your car or truck is in another one at the rear, the same type of rail cars that they ship new cars in.
I would highly recommend spending the extra money for a sleeper.
Cost varies on the time of year, summer is cheaper, for two people it's about a wash between flying and renting a car. If you have kids, the summer price for kids is about $25 each, so that's when you start saving money. Car fee is about $400 and up, adult tickets are about $75 and up, and sleepers are about $125 and up depending.
I took the trailer with my jetski once, no problem, I just had to pay for two vehicles.
The last two times we drove down to FL and took the train back home.
This year it was just me and the wife. We went to the NHRA Nationals in Bristol, TN, camped there, and drove to FL after and spent the rest of the week. Bristol has radar cameras that will snap your picture and send you a speeding ticket in the mail. :headbang:

Not that I can find on the 'puter, no.

Probably. I love it and think it's a blast. Oh, and they take motorcycles too.
Upside to the Auto Train is that it is non-stop. I could take a train from Pittsburgh to D.C. to Orlando but that would take a day and a half and cost more than double what flying costs.

Hey, what if I hide in the back of the car to save on passenger rail fare. What are my chances of getting away with that. Like do they search your vehicle before you load it on the train?

Sounds good..........(no....not sleeping in the trunck of the car suprapsu)

Reminds me of this train vacation I saw on TV a while ago, you park your RV/Trailer on a flat car and enjoy the ride. I don't really remember any other details though.

02RANGERXLT............you guys have me interested in the AutoTrain now!!!!!!!!!!

double check yo link yo... (it no work)

it works fine for me.... it is just a link to a bunch of pictures.....

and the one of the Supervisors made me sad, cause 1 of them passed away not long after that photo was taken from complications from a motorcycle accident.....

that's brutal... i have a family friend who went out for milk and bread on his bike one day, never made it home... it's been 8 months or so now, and he has just gotten the ability to lift his arm off of his thigh, and place it on the arm rest of his wheel chair... sucks because he was one of the most unique people i've ever met... and he will never be the same... i don't know how much, if any brain damage was done

Huh... link works good for me! Yeah DG, I'm also kinda interested in it! Seems like a neat thing! I wonder... do they chain/strap the vehicles down or do they just have people put it in park and hit the parking brake? I would assume they would strap everything down, but then again that would be a lot of work...:icon_confused:

just as long as they don't throw one of those 18 wheeler tie-down straps over the cab and draw it down unti the shocks compress.....!
