I got a 1997 Ford Ranger from a friend a few months ago. 4wd hasn't worked in the time I've had it. Shifts to 4hi (not 4lo but that's another problem) and you can see the front driveshaft spinning if you look underneath while driving so I've narrowed it down to the hubs not working. I've spent days messing around with my automatic hubs and reading forum posts.
The hubs were packed with grease which apparently is a common reason why they don't work. I cleaned them up but still no luck. Letting the hubs sit overnight to soak to make sure I've got 100% of the the grease out just in case. I'm starting to think the hubs might just be broken. If I take the cam piece off and put it directly against the hub body as described at the bottom of https://www.therangerstation.com/tech/ford-ranger-4x4-locking-hub-troubleshooting/ it only locks up if I hold the hub upside down. From what I've read it's supposed to have some sort of spring mechanism, but now that I've got the grease out, it just moves back and forth with no resistance.
Haven't seen any 1997 or older rangers in the junk yards around here and doesn't look like you can get the automatic hubs anymore. What do you guys think? Are my auto hubs toast and I should just do a manual swap?
Thanks!
