aussie locker ?'s

everyone I've asked says open front and locked rear for trail riding so you can actually turn... they've said the front lockers will get you through hairy stuff, but also shove you into the ditch when you didn't want to go there...

you can always leave one hub unlocked. instead of eating up tires on the street.

I always leave my hubs unlocked on the street(though it doesn't matter unless you're in 4wd, also I hear people say unlock 1 hub so u can turn...good luck I tryed that and the damn thing only wants to drive in circles lol). Yes you will lose some turning with the front locker but once you learn how it turns and whatnot you won't even notice.

you can still turn with a locker up front, just have to go at things a little differently....after you get used to it and learn it youll never know its there

Lock the rear first, locking the front only makes the front axle do the majority of the work.

Agreed locking only the front may break stuff (at least it makes sense) cuz it would be doing all the work (heavier end of truck)....

for a dd a front locker is best to start with then you save your tires on the payment. unlike a rear locker eats up your rear tires faster

That right there is the prime reason I will never lock the front of mine. It's not a rock crawler.......yet.

If anything, Torsen LS front.....whenever the hell they release the release information. lol.

Not if it's anything other than a spool.....

A rear locker wont wear your tires anymore than normal. Concerning locking up the rear and chewing up tires....i think it matters what kind of locker you buy. I have had no-slip now for just shy of 30K miles and havent noticed any accelerated tire wear, nor any chunking etc etc.

At least for the powertrax no-slip, tire wear is a non-issue and i would think the same for other manufacturers products as well (all the automatic lunchbox lockers operate in the same fashion). i wouldnt worry about tire wear with a rear locker, again non-issue and not a deciding factor. unless its a spool.

I'd say lock em both...if you have the money ARBs. if not go with either a no-slip and aussie up front or no-slip and lockrite up front.

If it was a full carrier detroit automatic what ever you call it, i MIGHT worry about tire wear.....but probably not.

And lastly, the fact that this guy is even considering lockers means he wants to build/modify his truck above and beyond what stock can do so i bet he could care less if his new locker wears tires by subtracting 250 miles from the lifespan of them.... Thats negligible, its a 4x4...you drive it to show off your work and wheel on weekends..... and everything you do is a compromise anyway. Wheeling it period wears more off your tires as opposed to an automatic locker alone.

^^ A Detroit is basically an Aussie or No-slip or Lock Right, but in it's own new carrier. It's a torque activation differential just like those too, so it ratchets around corners off the gas, locks like a spool when on it.

The only one that'll scrub, at least in the rear, would be a mini-spool or a full spool or welded spiders(lincoln locker). Everything else is selectable and/or auto locking and ratcheting when unlocked for corners. I personally havn't noticed any additional tire scuffing from the Aussie in the rear on the street. Out wheeling, I couldn't care less about tire wear.
