So I ended up water logging the engine in my ranger and couldn’t get any spin out of it no matter what we tried and I found a 2003 mountaineer with the 4.0 and wondering if it’s even possible

For a direct drop into your truck, I am seeing engines listed from 2007 to 2011. Can modifications be made to the 2003? I do not know.

So maybe a dumb question, but is the Ranger currently a 4.0?

If so then all of the dress from the 09 could likely be used on the 03 engine. Keep an eye out for missing bolt holes on the block/heads. And that may be early enough to have the original style not so great timing set. Probably a good idea to change them any time a 4.0 SOHC is out anyway.

Regarding the timing chain tensioners only, these are a big deal killer, however after '06 they got it right at the Ford factory. If the block fits, I would R&R the tensioners either way. There is plenty about dealing with those around this forum and others. Q: is this an upgrade or swapping out an existing 4.0?
