AOD Tranny Question

I always thought the E4OD was designed around the C6 gearset. Of course, pretty well everything else becomes different.

Back to the OP, the E4OD would be pretty much irrelevant for a Ranger V8 swap simply because of it's size. I'm still contemplating transmissions for my 351W swap and the AOD is the easiest because the only OEM 351w/5.8l EFI computer with controls for an electronic transmission you will find will likely be for a 5.8l/E4OD. It may be possible to use this computer with a 4R70W. The only other option is an external controller.

The 4R70W is too computerized.

He is wanting to get away from computers.

351W into a ranger, not impossible but a little harder than a 302 due to the exhaust. Search around it's been covered quite a few times recently. http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133115
AOD isn't a problem, last non-computer transmission used. You need to set the TV cable correctly or buy a constant pressure valvebody. Carb or EFI, depends. Carb will be cheaper and easier but EFI is better in the long run. If you have a carb engine leave it that way or spend the coin and buy an aftermarket EFI conversion. A conversion will be all new, TBI injection and is self learning. For the transmission confusion. The AOD (based from the FMX), became the AODE then renamed 4R70W and now is a 4R75. The E4OD (based from the C6) became the 4R100. The torque shift (5R110 and now 6R140) is based from the 4R100. Lightenings only came with the E4OD as most other vehicles 351W powered aside from some vans I believe had AOD(E)s. I haven't seen a factory 351W vehicle without either a C6 or E4OD, doesn't mean there isn't any though.

Wait a minute.... wasn't the FMX the POS that would pop out of park when idling? The AOD was derived from that? Wow.

Yeah it's roots were planted there...amazing isn't it? Another note, no a 4r70 won't run from a E40D computer. Only options there are use all the electronics from a donor or buy a stand alone trans controller. Sad to say those options are the future of engine swaps.

I put an AOD into my Mazda B3000. It works really well NOW but when looking for a unit , see if you can find one from a Mustang, TBird or Cougar (pre 94) It will have the higher rpm governor

I had problems with mine and had to swap it out for an AOD out of an Econoline van until I can rebuild the mustang unit. The shift points are around 1500 rpm and takes away from the fun of having a v8 powered mini truck.

Another thing to keep in mind if sticking with a carb (like I did), you will need to fabricate a linkage for the TV cable to carb. It pulls the opposite direction of the throttle cable at a ratio equal to the amount of throttle you apply. Can be a bit of a pain in the a$$ to get it right. This is critical on an AOD and one of the reasons some people will avoid them.

I believe the early EFI throttle bodies have a linkage on them for the TV cables

Mid 80's Crown Vics and Mercury Marquis had a metal rod for the AOD kickdown. It is adjustable. Needs to be right though or your trans won't last very long.

this is a great summation.

aod with some mods works good with 351. very min is a recal kit from be-controls.

fmx is the precursor to the aod

c6 the e40d.

i have built everything from the 110 down, and its easy to fawk them up.

if your going to have decent power and efi...the e40d is ok. but its a fat bastard. i have a 4l80 and its a fat bastard too....but lots of room with a body lift. study up on the aod parts, they are the easiest to deal with regardless.
