AOD Tranny Question

I would like to put an aod with a 351 Windsor into my truck. With an aod does it need a computer? I was planning on having a carbed motor to eliminate the computer. Also, what headers should I use with the swap? I have a 94 2wd regular cab with a 4" suspension lift on it. Lastly, with a carbed engine, do I just need a fuel regulator to lower the fuel pressure?

Why go carb? Carb sucks and your truck is already setup for EFI.

If I went efi and got a donor vehicle with an aod, would that computer work for the tranny and fuel injection?

I think the AOD was the last computerless trans Ford built. They were all cables and vacuum modulators.

The E4OD was an AOD with electronics starting to be added.

So yes, it should work fine with an AOD and just about any computer you want to use.

When did the 351's start coming with fuel injection? What possible donor vehicles could I find with a fuel injected 5.8, and 2wd aod?

Pretty much everything was EFI by 86. Your best bet for an all-in-one donor would be an 86 to 89 truck.

Alright. What headers will work? And I shouldn't have to change my fuel pump if I keep the new engine efi right?

Stay away from the AODE as well if you don't want electronics.

I also believe you mean the 4R70W rather than the E4OD Adsm.... The E4OD is kin to the 4R100 IIRC.

I must ask though - why a 351W? For the extra hassle involved to make it fit - it's far easier to use a 302.

The 4R100 is an 4R70W case stuffed with Torqshift guts.

Hmmmm, well the AOD, AODE, and 4R70W share the same pan - and the E4OD and 4R100 share the same pan.

I can't find the thing now, they took the 4R100 and SVT Lightning courses down. I know the 4R100 is a mash up of different trannies.

Maybe it was Torqshift guts in an E4OD case.

Now that I think of it, the E4OD was the trans in the early PSD.... 95-97 maybe? It was the trans prior to the torqshift.

I will have to ask my friend again, but he told me a while back that one of the transmissions Ford used actually had 5 speeds, but only uses 4. It uses a different 1st gear it uses depending on the temperature of the trans.

Sent from a Commodore 64 using a 300 baud modem

I always thought the E4OD was designed around the C6 gearset. Of course, pretty well everything else becomes different.

Back to the OP, the E4OD would be pretty much irrelevant for a Ranger V8 swap simply because of it's size. I'm still contemplating transmissions for my 351W swap and the AOD is the easiest because the only OEM 351w/5.8l EFI computer with controls for an electronic transmission you will find will likely be for a 5.8l/E4OD. It may be possible to use this computer with a 4R70W. The only other option is an external controller.

That is the Torqshift. It has 6 available ranges but only uses 5. IIRC it will stay out of 5th gear until temp is reached. Then once it gets to temp it will skip 4th and use 5th instead.

Ahh, OK. That's what I was thinking.
