My credo
A properly suspensioned Ranger can be safely airborne for up to 4 seconds at a time! =:O
Besides the MPG gains with manual vs. auto trans, I've seen specs on other not-so-large vehicles where the auto weighs OVER 100 lbs. MORE than the manual... WTH?

That kinda caught me by surprise... but then I don't really know much about auto trannies.

Anyway, can't find those weights for the Ranger, does anyone know them?

There are A LOT more steel parts in an automatic transmission. They are heavy SOBs.

I couldn't lift a 4EAT by myself when I needed to (though that's a transaxle; those are even heavier because of the differential parts). I could lift my Toyota manual transaxle by myself when it was out.

If you ever have a blown one handy, disassembling one is rather educational. And it's a lot easier to haul it to the recycler that way as well.

But frankly, the weight isn't relevant. 100 lbs might matter for a drag race, where you win or lose by milliseconds, but for mileage, removing a few percent of the vehicle weight isn't going to be even slightly measurable. And I doubt the difference is THAT big.

MAKG, he just asked about the wieghts. Probably cause he is curious, not cause he is looking to drag his ranger or something.

IIRC, a M5OD weighs in at arounD 80lbs. I have tossed around an A4LD tranny before and I would estimate that it is in the 120-130lb range.

I agree with metalmacguyver on the weights. An A4LD weights about 75-100 pounds more than a M50D, but it is manageable to throw around if you have to; the hardest part is it is weird to hold.

The 80 lb weight for an M5OD is entirely reasonable (having thrown one around).

100 lb more for an A4LD is not reasonable. I think you overestimate your strength. 180 lbs is certainly more than I can handle by myself, even if it comes with handles instead of greasy rounded bits. I've tried throwing around 150 lb SM465s. About all I can do is drag one on the ground.

I don't know how much they weigh but without the TC I didn't have a problem moving my '85 A4LD around. I briefly tried to move it with the TC in and found that they like to fall out and make a mess and smash fingers as they move around... so I left it it out after that.

I can move my 2wd C-4 and my 4x4 C-4/5 mutant around pretty easy too.

I have to agree, 120-130lbs dry for one is probably about right. The fluid will add a lot of weight to it, I think mine calls for about 10 qts.

Don't quote me but if I recall correctly an A4LD weighs ~160lbs.

an M5OD-R1? 80lb is close, I think a "Bare" one is more like 86-88lbs
because the little spruce "pallet" I ship them on weighs less than 10lb
and shipping weight averages 98lbs.

Thanks for all the feedback guys!

It was just curiosity, but now I'm thinking of the millions of bbls. of oil lost in MPG, plus the extra upfront E used in mining/smelting/casting/shipping an auto tranny. Ree-diculous. Yet even with all the renewed emphasis on MPG, Big Auto refuses to push manuals.
