Anyone know anything about snowblowers?

2013 ish MTD yard machines 2 stage with a 208CC "powermore" engine.

Looks like this...

Anyways, its shifted by a cable that pulls a lever that is hooked to some kind of goofy slide thst moves along the axle.

How it works beyond that im not really sure.

Either way, the damn thing is so hard to shift that it broke the cable last year.

Im putting a new cable on, but i need it to shift properly. Im wondering if i need to grease where it slides on the axle? But i dont know and i dont wanna dick it up.

Any ideas?

make sure any linkage rods or connecting points on the cable are not bent and binding up. taking it apart and cleaning/ greasing is a good idea. I have a Craftsman one of those from the late 90s, but I don't think it has a shift cable, just linkage rods. and depending on what gets bumped into it could bend those rods...

This one doesnt have rods. Just a cable hooked to a couple pretty robust looking pieces of metal lol. Ive had it since new and its lived a pretty easy life. I guess ill shoot some grease and see what i can figure out.

Worst case ill order a carb for my old snowbird lol.

My back likes snowblowers much better than shovels when it comes to snow removal. The shovel is for clean up after the machine has done it's thing.

@rusty ol ranger; I think most snowblowers are a belt driven system now. I would pull a cover or two off and take a gander at the drive system to see if anything is bound up. Maybe rust has gotten to the things that are supposed to move and need cleaned up.

I did pull the cover off but i didnt inspect it super close. Pry gonna do that tmw

Funny story on how I came into my late 90s era Craftstman 2 stage blower...In 2012, my parents moved to Kentucky from Illinois and Dad asked me if I wanted his snow blower. (hellyeah!) he said that he is moving to a city that has a Confederate Civil War hero statue at the courthouse, he figures he would not need a snowblower. That winter he got two storms with over a foot of accumulation. Next year and the year after again, 2 storms of more than 12" accumulation. He said the hell with it and bought a new 2 stage snow blower from Lowes.

i have a monster truck troy built......ridiculously well built and reliable.


but a rat skull was blocking a drive control..... and it would only goin a circle.....till i got home and looked at it. 3 months later.



wet heavy snow......it is a must have.

I'm stuck at work fixing the plow trucks for any real storms... my neighbor comes over does the driveway with his Bobcat. I just have to do some donuts and finish up whatever he didn't do.
