hey all havent posted in a while but i still troll the forums a little. finally getting back to working on the ranger but im going in a different direction now. the truck is 2wd with an 302ho and aod in it. plans are to convert from 2wd to 4wd and figure while im at it might as well go big or go home. the choice for axles right now are either going to be some dana 60s or rockwell 2.5 tons. tires are going to probably start out as 44s or 48s and will get bigger from there. im leaning towards the rockwells because for a set for me the rockwells are only $200 more for the set and since were planning on going with some tractor tires later on i feel like it would just be one less thing we would have to upgrade. my real questions are what would you guys recomend for a transfer case. and has anyone done a swap like this and have any pointers or a build log?even pics would be nice. thanks

Is this truck going to be a DD or strict fun/offroad truck?

well if your running a bigblock and rockwells np205 atleats maybe (if you have the money) an atlasII

How do you figure he is or will be runing a big block?? I must be missing something :icon_confused:
I would definitely go with a gear case, whether a dana 20, 205, 300, or an atlas. If you go rocks, I'd do with lockers and pinion brakes...Do a search, there are a couple people doing rocks under rangers...

Go and join a different. Site like pirate one that deals more with that

Small block 302. Not crazy built but stout. If I had to guess probably close to 300 hp with the mods that are into it. Also the truck will never ever see the road this will just be a toy. And thanks for allthe responses.

Also it won't let me edit my post but the pinion breaks are planned now were deciding between a locker and a spool

I'd try to stay away from a pinion brake setup. Gearhart makes a wheel disc brake setup should you decide to go that route. Also if you are tearing them down and rebuilding them from the ground up, there is a company in georgia called csi with original parts for about half the aftermarket cost, and they're all made in america! Tom is the guy you want to talk to there.

Sounds good. I wasn't planning on tearing them down unless I had to but depending on the shape of the axles when I get them it's a good possibility. Also how many different gear ratios of rockwells did they offer a guy on the local cl has a Rockwell 5 ton rear and only wants 350 for it but he said it's got 6.44 gears in it an I gota make sure it will work with the other front end?

Not sure on the deuce ratios, i know 6.67:1 is by far the most common. 5 tons come in one standard ratio of 6.44:1, and two hard to find ratios of 8.88:1 and 10.24:1.

If at all possible try not to have to rebuild them, if you do, it will get super expensive, super fast.

Yup that's what I was thinking. Plus I found a set of brand new 2.5 tons for 900 for the set which I didn't think was to bad considering most of the Dana 60s around here are going for 3-500 a piece.

Two steers for that price or a steer and a rear? Great price either way if they're "new" (my guess is they're fresh rebuilds, rockwell hasn't made those axles since the mid '80s and even then most were used housings with new guts)

I'd definately talk to russ at gearhart about brakes, i think he does wheels too. If you want to spend a lot of money you could swing by chuckstrucks, i'd avoid them though, their stuff is second rate and they price it like its made of gold.

If you want the military manuals pm me.

ygpm and yea im sure the wheel brakes are better but from what ive seen the pinion brakes are around 1/4 of the price. which for me since funds are pretty limited means ill probably be going with the pinion setup. i appreciate the advice though and its something that will probably get upgraded later on. on the axles it was for a steer and a rear but the guy sold the steer so im going to be going through another guy. there gonna be 1200 but there fresh rebuilds.

i am running duece and a half rocks under my ranger and the gear ratio on the duece are 6.72, i went with a pinion brake set up and i love it only cost me about $300 bucks to get 2 kits and 2 loaded calipers, i would go with a full hydro steer on them as well. i am so glad i went with the rocks over a 60 70 combo and was a lot cheaper in the long run, t case i am running the 205 could not see spending a couple grand for the atlas when you can build a 205 into an atlas for half the price and thats if you put the 3:1 kit in it, you can build a twin stick out of a 205 for just a few hours of your time and nothing needed besides some silicone, i am still running the 2:1 gears and in low range on the trails i am cruising in 2 and 3 gear in low range sometimes 2nd in high and i am running 42s.

sounds good are you running a married or remote 205 transfer case? and this trucks going to be spending most of its time in 4 low and evn with a 2:1 transfer case and the tires im planning on running im thinking it should be pretty low but well have to see once it gets together. and putting a 7.3 in that thing is sick man. also whered you get the pinion setup
