anyone else pissed off by this silly program? many good useable vehicles will be gone due to this stupidity. id rather have the old stuff being junked than any new vehicle. i personally know of one ranger that left this a.m. to be replaced by a new kia. how sad. it was a std cab longbed '92 4x4 V6. i did trade the guy some bald tires for his factory alloys, got his spare tire, bed mat, receiver drawbar and shift motor off the t-case. i cant say i blame the guy, he paid 400 for the truck 2 years ago and is getting 4,000 for it. but it was completly useable and looked cleaner underneath than my '93. hopefully some dealers will cheat and re-sell the "good" stuff. i agree there is some junk that should go, but theres more stuff thats salvageable than the true junk out there. and most of driving 10-20 year old stuff cant afford the higher insurance and a payment for 4 years that comes with the new stuff. even if you only get 10 mpg and could get 20 with a new rig, it wouldnt be worth it if your suddenly 10-15K in debt with payments, you could have bout alot of fuel with that! while this could boost sales temporarily, once its done the auto sales slump will be back im sure. might even be worse because anyone who could have really afforded something new has already bought. maybe if these junked vehicles wind up at salvage yards, i can pick up a van or exploder and put in a engine. i wonder how the dealer is detroying the engine? running without oil? someone should steal the presidential limo and crush it into a cube and slap a sticker of the presidential seal on a prius and have it parked behind the crushed caddy in front of the white house. "heres your car"

I don't think the program is really going to help those who really could use the parts. Everyone says "recycle" when nothing is going to be usable. I always thought it was "reclaim, reuse and recycle". Sure would think there are a lot of good motors being destroyed. Below is the actual procedure in the 136 page bill that the dealers have to follow.
Looks like someone just posted the same info.

Appendix B to Part 599 - Engine Disablement Procedures for the CARS

Engine Disablement Procedures for the CARS Program
THIS PROCEDURE IS NOT TO BE USED BY THE VEHICLE OWNER

Perform the following procedure to disable the vehicle engine.

1. Obtain solution of 40% sodium silicate/60% water. (The Sodium Silicate
(SiO2/Na2O) must have a weight ratio of 3.0 or greater.)
2. Drain engine oil for environmentally appropriate disposal.
3. Install the oil drain plug.
4. Since the procedure is intended to render the engine inoperative, drive
or move the vehicle to the desired area for disablement.
5.Pour enough solution in the engine through the oil fill for the oil pump
to circulate the solution throughout the engine. Start by adding 2 quarts
of the solution, which should be sufficient in most cases.
CAUTION: Wear goggles and gloves. Appropriate protective clothing should
be worn to prevent silicate solution from coming into contact with the skin.
6. Replace the oil fill cap.
7. Start the engine.
8.Run engine at approximately 2000 rpm (for safety reasons do not operate
at high rpm) until the engine stops. (Typically the engine will operate for
3 to 7 minutes. As the solution starts to affect engine operation, the
operator will have to apply more throttle to keep the engine at 2000 rpm.)
9. Allow the engine to cool for at least 1 hour.
10.With the battery at full charge or with auxiliary power to provide the
power of a fully charged battery, attempt to start the engine.
11.If the engine will not operate at idle, the procedure is complete.
12.If the engine will operate at idle, repeat steps 7 through 11 until the
engine will no longer idle.

who wants to use that stuff in the presidents car? I DO!!!!:headbang::headbang::icon_rofl:

now what if the engine has major blow-by? wil is still work?

I'm going on second hand info on this bill, but if i'm not mistaken the dealers have 6 months to sell anything but engine related parts on the vehicle. Them it is sent to a shedder where the end pieces cannot be bigger than a fist. Next stop to be melted and rendered to recycled steel and iron to go to china.

I am so pissed off I can't see straight. They keep showing it on our local news... the perfectly good cars with the engines knocking and smoke pouring out like it is the greatest thing in the world.

I got an idea, why not donate the cars to people who can't afford to go out and buy a new car? Gee... what caused the problem to begin with? A bunch of morons who bought shit and could not afford it... way to make the same idiots do the same thing over again, whilst ruining a crapload of good vehicles.

If I was at a dealer working and was told to ruin the cars like that I would quit.

f(*^ing idiots!

blow by wouldnt affect things much, its running salt water (basically) instead of oil in the crankcase, the bearings will score up and seize.

i totally agree.

The deal around here is to have a big dumpster sitting in front of your dealership with two cars sticking out of it...

I heard a story where a tech at one of the dealers dumped 2 gallon of water in the crankcase of a Superduty and held the engine at 4,000 rpm. It lasted for 14 minutes supposedly. It is nothing but a waste of good vehicles.

jspafford, thats what iv seen around here too, why do they have 2 destroy the engine? whats so bad about selln it if its not too bad? and do they part them out or do they just send em all to the shredder

hopefully some dealers will cheat and re-sell the "good" stuff.

There are pretty stiff fines for not junking the trade ins, I think it is about $25k per car...

On MSN they were saying the most common vehicle being turned in to Ford dealerships was the Explorer, the most common going out was the Fusion.

Honestly I think something like this would have been a better bailout than just giving the banks/automakers billions of dollars, they are both getting a huge injection of cash right now. And then set up a charity to sell them below blue book to those that need a cheap set of wheels.

The entire bill is just bullshit. I love our governments solution to everything, spend more money and go into more debt.

Oh and this should be in the tailgate.

I'm more upset about the waste of tax dollars. as far as parts availability is concerned I'm sure there will still be plenty of useable engines left. alothough their engine disabling proceedure does seem a bit intense. They are probably also supposed to piss on the engine after it seizes.
