Anybody know about trailers?

I'm trying to identify the style of wheels and drums on an old equipment trailer a friend of mine bought, and I'm coming up empty. He thinks they're "Dayton" style hubs, like you see on trucks, but these have no clamps that hold the wheels on. I can get a pic later, but I'll try to describe them as best as I can.
The wheel is 15" with a large maybe 8" circle opening in the center. They have a 4x roughly 9" lug pattern. It uses lug bolts that thread into the drums, and the left side has left hand threads. The drums are 10" x 2.5" roughly and have 4 large fins starting about where the lug bolts thread into the drum and ending at the spindle bore. Inside the drum it's just like any other electric trailer brake, only it's about ~40 years old.

One of the wheels was replaced recently ( I say recently it was probably 20 years ago), the other looks original and is falling apart like it too. We are trying to find a replacement wheel, which has prompted the search for information.

Any help out there?

Sure can't think of anything than a military type trailer. The wheel mounting bolts went out a long time ago. That a huge bolt pattern with only four lugs.

Late VW's still use them.

I hate wheel bolts, most of the wheels on my tractors use them. Nothing funner than trying to line up a big tire full of fluid just right so the bolt can start. :icon_thumby:

Well it took about 2 hours of searching, but I think I found some wheels that will fit it here: http://www.trailertiresandwheels.com/site/1284278/product/017-120-43

A bit different style but that's the closest thing I can come up with.

I found a link on Youtube of all places a guy who had been selling some of these wheels made a video. This is what the drums look like if anyone is interested.

These say Dayton Fayette on them. So I guess Dayton was the maker.
And a video with what the wheels look like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKHtRljQKCI

My first thought was the old VW bug wheels, the '65 and older bugs. So I looked them up and they are similar but 5 lug.

You also might check out campers. I kind of remember the camper we had growing up having a spare kind of like that, it might be five lug though. It always has had hubcaps on it, but I will try to remember to check out the spare tomorrow.

Hahaha! I hate them too believe me. This one especially!
I tried to convince him to just buy a new axle with all new brakes hubs everything. The trailer is double axle and with two different styles of wheels (the front axle was replaced for some unknown reason, and has standard 6 lug wheels) he'll have to carry two different spares with him. Plus how hard is it going to be to find left hand thread lug bolts if one of those breaks.

The camper spare looks just like the rim you posted... but is a 14".

If you want two spare axles and 5 spare 14" rims and live close to Omaha, the parents have been wanting to get rid of it...

Omaha!?!?! :D lol

That line from Convoy just popped into my head.

Omaha's a bit far from VA, but I appreciate the offer.
