Check all the bearings on the deck. If one seizes while it's running it will break the weakest link in the chain. Had a similar thing happen to mine today, see my jd 111 thread.

I finally got around to pulling the deck off of the mower. All of the bearings are good. I changed out the drive belt... I had an extra one laying around and I'm going to Lowes/Home Depot to get a new bolt for it, tomorrow. Out of the hundreds of bolts that I have... not one of them would work.
