i was told by an old mechanic tht adding 3 ounces or less of acetone to 10 gallons of fuel can increase it by up to 25% the guy had been using it in his car for the past 8 or 9 years and has had no issues with over 200k on it. i decided to try this in my 95 ranger and started a few months ago. i originally got 23 mpg with stock wheels and tires and gearing. i have since changed to 235/75/15's and 3.73 gears and changed the speedometer drive so my odometer and speedometer are correct. this kept my milage at around 22mpg. after using 2.5 ounces of acetone per 10 gallons im getting 26.5 on average with the 235's. if i keep my foot out of it and stay under 60 i can manage to squeak out 28 but thats not how i drive. after a few weeks with my 04 to get a baseline for its milage im going to give that a try.

if at first you dont succeed, find a way to blow it up...

There you go. lol

ive got over 3k on using acetone and hasnt blown up. that mechanic has been using it since he put gas in the car for the first time. if anything was going to blow up it would have by now. especially an s10 blazer with 200k

I'd be wary of using acetone in the fuel. Its the same stuff that's in brake cleaner, and very similar to the stuff in starter fluid that ruins the oil.

I'm not saying you can't get away with it since lots of people do, but I'd be wary of it.

acetone makes up a lot of fuel treatments and injector cleaners. it is a solvent but then again so is gas.

There are alot of different ways to cheat the octane ratings in fuel. Manufacturers do this by using different additives. Check out some of the racing websites, as I believe toluene was also something that could be added to fuel to get a bump in the octane rating.

As far as it wrecking oil....no. Fuel should never mix with your oil, if it is...then there are bigger problems with your motor.

Why then, don't pro racers (on and off road) use this solvent? Nobody I know has or will ever use this in there cars, truck, or street or dirt bikes. I don't really understand why somebody would use this??

You are right about the fuel and oil thing, but in starting fluid it vaporizes to the point that it gets past the rings some after a few minutes anyway.

My concern is about that happening.

i remember when i was in the military back in the 70's and early 80's they experimented with a 50/50 ratio of unleaded and regular leaded gas. the result was that the octane was greater than what both of them individually had for ratings originally. most of my fellow soldiers took the extra time to mix them when they gassed up their pov's. i know i did until they did away with leaded gas altogether. it was cheaper then premium or "ethel" for those of you old enough to remember that term.
currently, i do use alcohol regularly in the winter as it binds to water in gasoline and evaporates it out when temps are below 0. helps keeps gas lines from freezing.

I did this with my Ranger when the GAS (Get All Salaries) Companies switched over to that Ethanol crap!!!! I used 87 and 93 blended together and really got better power and more gas mileage. But it was not worth the cost later on since the gas prices went up so much the past 5 years.

Don't get me started on the Arabs since I had to protect them when I was in Special Ops and Bush (both of them) ordered us to do so!!! Jerks of all Jerks. They will all get a Payback soon!!!!!!

you use it in such a miniscule amount that it wont be enough to get past the rings. its like a 320:1 ratio of gas to acetone. a lot less than putting in a bottle of some other chemical. my ranger gets 4-5 more mpg for about 50 cents a tank. had no issues so far and i think if it was going to cause a problem his blazer would have been dead by now. should be dead anyways since its a damn 2.8 chevy.

some pro racers do.

my dad did it back in the day to a dodge colt used for autocross

its not really much of a performance boost mainly a economy boost. its also outlawed in some classes of racing like the dakar rally in the upper end classes where they test fuel. also top end race cars already have technology that vaporizes fuel better than any stock vehicle under 100k and wouldnt benefit from it. its not like i didnt do my homework before i started doing it. i made sure it wouldnt hurt my truck first and the most it really does is make some gaskets swell but doesnt disrupt the integrity of them like ethanol does. if i had fuel with no ethanol i would probably be getting the same gas milage as with the acetone and if i had acetone in that fuel i would be getting around 30. my ranger is set up exactly the same as my previous one and it gets 3mpg less with half the milage on it. wish i could find fuel without the ethanol in it but i think nobody in ny carries it anymore.
