any of you using acetone in your fuel?

normally this wives tail comes up when gas prices are sky high

my 04 gets 20.57 when i baby it. 2 full tanks averaged out. were each only off by .3mpg. put in 4 ounces of acetone and filled it up. will post results. no lights going off no spitting or sputtering.

Yeah, to everyone calling out wives tails, and not posting any proof. Id like to see some numbers. I will most likely be trying this myself soon too. As far as mixing with the oil, the only thing itwill do is wash the cylinder walls, but the small amounts your all referring too isnt any worse than a vehicle running rich. Which they all do in open cycle anyways. My mustang (3.8L) had long tubes, offroad h piipes and flows, which inherantly gave my o2's bad readings due to the lack of cats. I never did computer tune and it even though it ran rich it never had any other issues. So the wallwashing isnt much of an issue.

Proof in numbers my 98 Grand cherokee average between 14.7 and 15.4 MPG with and without Acetone tried it for three months, I check my MPG each time I fill up, my 88 XJ got a consistent 14.3-14.9 did the acetone for three months as well Mythbusters did an episode on fuel savers and showed the acetone actually hurt MPGs but think what you want. Maybe it only magically works on fords

BTW how do you post proof of not working I would rather see proof of it working

It's not worth posting proof. Every summer, when gas prices climb, these threads pop up on every automotive board. This has been going on since 2005 at least. Disporving the theory year after year isn't enough. Why keep trying.

Go buy your acetone. I can tell you the only reason your mileage has improved is because subconsciously you are more aware of consumption and are driving accordingly. In that ONE regard, it works.

There's about as many people/articles out there proving this idea as there are disproving it...

Personally, here's my proof about why it's a bad idea.

That's a before and after picture. The bottle on the left has never had anything in it. However the bottle on the right had a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF. The bottle looks exactly like it would if I had held a blow torch to it for a few minutes. Do you REALLY want that stuff in your fuel system?

acetone is already in many fuel system cleaners. with 2 full tanks through my 04 of mid grade i got 20.57 and 20.35 mpg. with 2 ounces of acetone for 10 gallons for the next 2 tanks i got 22.3 and 22.02 mpg. driving same routes same speeds. my 95 went from an average of 22.75 up to 25 on average. i dont baby the 95 at all either. supposedly it works better on gas without ethanol but ill have to wait for the numbers on that.

If you really care that much about gas mileage, you would rockin a hybrid right now. all this effort for 3-4 mpg? who cares. lets say a 17 gallon tank, which would then equate to 68 miles extra on a tank. 68 miles at 25 mpg then = 2.72 gallons saved on a tank. 2.72 gallons x $3.79/gallon (price of gas out here in orange county CA) = $10.31 a tank saved. Oh subtract the $0.50 a tank for acetone per tank, then comes out to $9.81. Im not sure how long a tank lasts all of you, but im good for about 1.5 weeks. SO, in a year (52 weeks) I MAY have saved a MAX of $340.08...not too bad, I would love to save myself $340.08 a year! Here is the downside of it ALLLL...You don't seem very mechanically inclined, especially if you have to take advice from your MECHANIC *cough*. Is your mechanic going to cover the parts and labor for any damage that may be caused by doing this? There is a potential for even premature engine failure if the cards get stacked right. So, save $340 a year and gamble for a new $2000+ motor from your trusted mechanic, or just keep it simple w/ good ol' 87 octane? hmmmmm. BTW, you are giving amateur mechanical advice to people who potentially know NOTHING about cars other than "ICE" and exterior "MODS", not a very good idea

i was told by an old mechanic tht adding 3 ounces or less of acetone to 10 gallons of fuel can increase it by up to 25%

No matter what you are using, your regulator keeps the same amount of pressure and your injectors push out the same amount of fluid no matter whats in it.

Even if this did work, it sounds like denotation to me.

Gasoline alone will melt most cheaper plastics. That much of an increase in gas mileage would help me,saving money means more when you don't have much. Some engines can respond better to more octane also like when using mid grade or premium.

You guys have said that there is acetone in fuel additives... well, 5th gear tested a few of those fuel additives to see if they truly benefit in the power category...

and as stated before, mythbusters already busted the myth.

Some engines can respond better to more octane also like when using mid grade or premium.

Yes, if the manufacturer calls for it due to the compression ratio. But if it says 87 octane in the owners manual, you are definitely going to get better gas mileage with the 87 than you would with 91. And in the end, the price difference between the two doesn't add up to savings anyways.

I experimented a lot with using acetone several yeas ago. I found I did get a slight improvement in mpg but came to the conclusion it was due to the cleaning effect of the acetone. The slight increase in mpg continued even after I stopped using it. So now I just add a small amount when I do a fill up every couple months or when I think the fuel system needs a cleaning.

Acetone is a very strong solvent but will not harm the fuel system at a low addition of 3 oz per 19 gallons of gasoline. I always add the acetone first then fill up with gasoline to make sure the acetone is dispersed well.

Acetone is not an octane enhancer. In fact, it actually can reduce octane if too much is added but has zero effect at 3 oz per 19 gallons.
