A few years ago the exhaust system on my 90 Ranger fell apart. I had all new pipes put on from the down pipe back. I found out the exhaust manifold was also leaking. In the process of replacing it I had to cut the down pipe. the manifold is on and sealed, but the down pipe is cut in two. the pipe is a quarter inch from lining up and in a bend in the pipe, so wrapping it with aluminum has not worked out. Has anyone had any luck with exhaust wraps? I have a few different types that might work out, but wanted some opinions first. Not looking forward to laying under the truck on wet ground trying different methods. The ones I have are the soak in water then apply type. Any info would be appreciated.

Anything you could apply externally would be a band-aid at best.

Take it to an exhaust shop and have them mate the two pipes and weld them together.

i agree, i tried using exhaust wrap for basically the same thing and it wasn't worth the effort. as soon as the wrap flexed it started leaking.

Firstly, exhaust wrap is a woven cloth. It will not help contain pressure, like some people try with electrical / duct tape on a garden hose. It's menat to contain and isolate heat, not hold back fluids like gasses.

If you used industrial electrical tape for things such as duct work or insulating / seam-work for commercial buildings, then yes, that would work better. If you are able to lay all the pieces flat without wrinkles, you can use this.

Heat working range can be in the 500*F range, so use a quality tape. An absolutely clean exhaust manifold needs to be sanded down and cleaned before sticking the tape, too.

After this, wrapping it with exhaust wrap is better.

As stated, this is a bandage, and a lot of work when it could easily be welded up by an exhaust shop. They'll do it, you just have to find the one that will.

I condone both methods, but if it were my truck, I'd get the proper welded fix. For the money and time spent prepping the exhaust manifold and such, it could have had it done quicker elsewhere.

I have used the metal tape before, and it works very well.

*** The water soak type of wrap is good. I've used that before, too.
