Antenna killing Antenna?

I'm not looking to do that any time soon, still hoping to get a TV that can get through the maze of signals out there, but when one even takes the radar view right off a computer that's getting really strange, nothing else missing, the basic page still loads, but now minus the radar view

I took the TV apart I'd like to fix but I'm not sure if it's possible. if I could get the parts I would be glad to do it.
This one I can get, it is right beside the one I changed last time although it's a bit larger and not in the assortment I bought then, but they show it on Amazon and I hope it's available.

There's another thing there I'm not sure what it is, although I recalled it being rather distorted the first time too, it isn;t looking good either and I don't have any clue what is is or what it's for

It's in the same area as the others are

I don't really want a newer TV, I'd as soon go to Goodwill and get an old black and white

what is under the brown stuff that is popping off? it actually looks like a socket that someone put some goo in

nm = no message in other words the title of the thread is self-explanatory... which it isn't in this case

NOAA radar was blank for a few days then it's back but they only show last 20 minutes, it used to be last 1.5 hrs.

the fiber connection is super fast and a better deal than the old coax stuff but still pricey. if you have that plus Chromecast you can get quite a bit of stuff including Roku. Paramount has a lot of stuff. Netflix is nice, but they changed it so you can only sign on to one tv now (probably can fix that by throwing more dollars at it).

I have only looked at it, haven't poked around on it. The photo by itself you can see a heat ring around and above it

VR = variable resistor. Yeah, it got hot.

NM was never mind, I blanked it till next day, didn't want to leave it with the bots

You're right about the radar, it seems to have returned, that was seeming rather out of hand wasn't it

Still no TV stations, not even the local PBS one
My current TV still works fine on VCR or DVD but nothing on air

We just use our phones, and if we want to watch something on one of the 2 tvs we just use smart view. My wife and I have very different tastes in shows, so we mostly just watch our own thing on our phones in the evening. We have Amazon prime, Netflix, and Hulu, plus I watch alot of automotive based shows on YouTube. I haven't given Comcast money in well over 13 years. We have unlimited 5g internet, but Tmobile will throttle the signal down after 50 gigs every month. But it's enough to keep us happy. Plus in those 13 years I've saved 30000$ not paying comcast

haven't had cable for like 15 years we either did antenna or various streaming services.. now with the 1GB fiber connection soon to be 5GB connection all i do is stream content and can afford a few more subscriptions due to the fact my internet connection is free (I work for a growing fiber internet company).. I do have a TV antenna for a backup on the roof that gets like 50 or 60 ch.. don't use it much..

Just to make it clear, there is no such thing as a "digital" antenna except in advertising

A VHF antenna from 50 years ago would still work fine to receive digital VHF signals
Same for a UHF antenna, it will work fine to pick up digital UHF signals

Digital channels use an ANALOG carrier signal, which is why the old antennas work just fine, each carrier can have 1 or more HD digital signal packets embedded, "channel 2" is a carrier(VHF), and "channel 32"(UHF) as well
You do need a Digital Tuner hooked up to an antenna to tune in/pull out the digital packets(1's and 0's)
Any TV sold after 2005 was required by Law to have a Digital tuner built in

But you can also get stand alone digital tuners

TV Fool: https://www.tvfool.com/

Is a website that can show you what free digital channels are available in your location, and what antenna sizes may be needed, also HAT(height above terrain) which is important for your antenna height
Most TV Transmitters are up high on mountains or buildings
If you are in or near a bigger city there will be many channels available, not just Networks
Indoor antennas can also work if transmitters are close enough and not blocked by buildings, but they are for UHF channels, 14-36, 38-83
VHF requires a larger antenna

And in most cases ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and PBS are required to have a FREE local digital broadcasts to maintain their licences

So you can get local news and weather for free and use streaming for entertainment

Your existing coax cable in the house can be used to distribute Antenna signals, depending on how many outlets you need you can get an amplifier, usually 1 to 3 outlets are OK without amplification, but depends on the type of coax cable and length of each run to the TV location
Again not a "digital" thing any TV signal amplifier that does both VHF and UHF will work, you are amplifying the Carrier signal, channels 2 thru 83, the packets inside can not be amplified

VHF antennas can go in attic spaces, most roofing material is RF(radio frequency) transparent, UHF antennas are better outside or near a window if inside

Awesome Ron, My PBS station began working again so at least now I get my daily dose of news from DW Berlin, DW Paris and NHK in Tokyo, but still no local stations which I really do need for local news and weather, specially the weather part, even tho I can usually get NWS radar
I still haven't got the capacitors to fix my other TV so hoping still that it will re-gain the other network stations when I do
Thanks to you all for your helpful comments and advice

Nice link. So if I mounted an antenna on top my roof I might get 4 channels on a good day.

Thanks for saving me the effort.

VHF travels about twice as far as UHF, which is why us "old guys" remember channels 2 to 13 on the older TVs, that was all the TV there was
And we were our Dad's remote control, and we thought it was fun, lol

4 channels but free and its part of the emergency broadcast systems, so when "the sh!t hits the fan" you can watch it Live when cable, cell towers and internet are down :)
