ive done everything i can think of under the sun on this one. read countless forums. did everything everyone else has done and nothing has helped.

92 explorer 4.0 auto. 4x4.

sypmtoms; obvi bad gas mileage. no codes, after long drives, when i start it, it spudders hard and sometimes stalls out but will always restart, spudder goes away after its been running a while. also OD engages when it wants to.

ok so the parts list. tps, fuel pump, fpr, fuel/air filter, plugs, wires, o2, speed sensor on transfer case, rabs sensor on rear diff, maf.

cleaners; lucas, mmo, b12 liquid, seafoam.

tests; both air/coolant sensors read in the correct values. maf reads right according to youtube. i dont smell gas and i cant find a vac leak.

i run 87 octane only. i go the speed limit. i dont mash the gas. and yet i can get over 200 miles per tank.

i know im missing something huge but i dont have time or cant take apart my car and leave it for long periods of time.

ok so i think ive covered everything. thx for reading and thx for any help

Don't feel bad, my NA short bed 2.3 4x4 gets just over 200 miles to the tank :/

Tire pressure? Is it time for a tranny flush? Grease all your joints? Dif flush, both front and rear?

Is your a/c stuck on? Do all your pullies spin nice and good like?

How much do you use your ebrake? Could be stuck?

Just some immediate thoughts.

Good thoughts. Thx for the reply.

Tires at 40psi
Tranny done before this last winter
Haven't done joints since the trans was done
Serviced rear. Front is unknown. But it rolls freely. Nothing binds or is hard to move.
Ac isn't stuck on. All Pullies are good
Never have to use ebrake.

Hmmm... Try the injector flood test? Let it run for a bit, turn it off, put your foot to the floor and crank it. It should turn over with zero fire. If it acts like it's trying to fire, that's a sign of a leaky injector. Only other thing I can think of.

You still have good power?

I know you said no codes, my 92 4.0 every once in awhile will pop on a run rich code and I'll loose about 5mpg. No idea why, can't figure it out, but it clears after I unplug the battery..... Then after 1000 miles or so it comes back on.

OP, exactly what is the mpg of this rig?:D

thx chewy.

ok so i get this right. im going to run the car engine on. then shut it down and press the gas pedal to the floor and crank. if it trys to start i have a leaking injector

i went for a drive end of town and back. got dinner and went home. when i got into the drive way i shut the engine off then turning the key to the on position with out starting it. i didnt this about 20 times, pressed the pedal to the floor and cranked the engine. i studdered one time and turn over.

i know i can do this in my b2 and it wont start. the motor will just crank until i let off the gas the it will start.

so what does this mean.

I have a 92 Ranger 3.0, and I've dealt with a couple of issues that sound very similar to what you are going through. One was the ECM after a heater core leak that dumped coolant all over the top of it. It corroded some of the pins, and I started having issues with my truck running rough, stalling out, bad gas mileage, etc. This did give me a CEL, though. The other issue was the PCV valve. My truck was running rough, loss of power, and really bad gas mileage. Put in a new PCV, and the truck ran better than it had in years. Good luck, and I hope you figure it out!

ill check that out. i last looked in that like 2 years ago. i wouldnt hurt to look again

Sounds like you did the test right. It sputtered and tried to turn once in 20 tries? You remember where in the number of attempts this was? Usually that's a sign of a leaking injector. But 1 in 20, I'm not sure I'm convinced there's
a leaky one.

yeah me neither.

its got to be something simple. it could connected to the fact my over drive doesnt work properly either.

it only works when it wants to.

Oh yeah haha, that's probably be the culprit. You looked into that issue much?

well about 2 years ago when i first got the explorer. the only thing i checked was to see if maybe the computer had corrosion on it. i was told water can leal on it from a bad seal in the windshield. but there was nothing.

i didnt look any further cuz of lack of time. lol got a lot now tho. i was going to get a test light and lift the rear end high enough to clear the wheel from hitting the ground and have someone accelerate til 40 plus and test for ground at the solenoid connector. or power. could be anything.

Yeah, while you're doing that, you might take a 9v battery and make some jumper wires, see if you can manually click on solenoid that way. Then you'd know if the solenoid works.

Sounds like it's a loose connection
