I'd sure like to see some pictures of them Hi-Po heads. Those are worth some money, very few made in '64'. Stock C/R was about 10.5-1.

I believe the 289 is 28oz balance. so you might be able to use a 4 bolt balancer off of a new 28oz balance 302(68 and newer up to 81)then you could possibly use the serp setup off that crown vic. but double check to make sure everything will line up.
As for the heads I wouldn't bet on them being hi po to check look at the pushrod holes if they are hi po the holes will be slotted and the rocker studs will be screw in not pressed in.
if they aren't hi po no big deal they will still work but if they are hi po don't hurt them cause they are worth big$$$$.
 
Thanks CH. I gotta run the head bolts by this week and I'll get some pics of the heads. The rocker studs screw on. You can find 289s every now and then on Craig s list for around 200 - 400 in different conditions. I'll check into the harmonic balancer thanks for the reminder on that!

Yes, you are correct but all the pre '66' heads had the slot. Very common back then when running a big cam to swap in the threaded studs. You can't even tell by the casting number. Got a set of C5AE heads, same casting as the Hi-Po's, in the basement right now. Hi-Po's have cast in spring pockets and what they call a "double dot 289" cast in between the rockers. Another number only the Hi-Po's have is a number 19,20 or 21 cast into the outside corner where the valve cover sits.
