Should a person upgrade their alternator if they are going to be using a winch? Or maybe the battery? Thanks in advanced.

I don't think so for that occasional pull out of a bad spot.If you go to areas where winching is part on the routine then it would be a good idea.I've been told newer winches use a lot less juice than they used to.

I upgraded my Ranger alternator to 200 amps and put in a 1000 CCA battery. Also doubled up the wires ( easier for me than using larger wire.)

It works much better than my Jeep XJ with a stock alternator and 800 CCA battery.

Both rigs have a voltmeter and I stop often using the XJ winch because the voltage drops too low.

An upgraded alternator never hurts, but isn't necessary. A good battery would be a better first investment, then upgrade the alternator when funds allow it. A good set of cables is also worth installing, 2 guage/single 0 would be my choice.
