Took the truck 4wheeling this week end A long hard steep run then a mud filled valley a lot of fun and new battle scars for the truck. This is not the problem but I would have made a lot of ranger owners very proud of how capable the truck was or very angry for the complete disregard for the body and well being of the truck ha ha. {Still have power loss so all I can do with the truck is off-road and I'm getting my money worth wlill have some video footage of the next trip stay tuned}. OK OK OK here my problem due to the power loss and testing things ECT I have kept the dizz not all the way tight in place so I can mess with the timing. Well I was hitting a straight up area trying to pop the front tires over and crawl on up and on the fourth attempt got the tires up and over and this damn truck was pulling it and I couldn't believe it then bam power loss and rolled back down. truck would not start I got out and moved the dizzy and it fired up and I watched the dizzy slowly spin backwards and the truck died and would not restart. I had the truck pulled home pulled the dizz out and the lower half of the gear lost some teeth like it jumped up and hit a few times the top have and areas of the bottom are ok. This is a new dizz. I guess the questions I have is can I use this as is I would think so if it makes contact with the whole gear as the top is not damaged at all. also the gear that drives this inside the motor because I know I'm going to get some you need to replace the dizz gear and check for metal in the dis shaft area and the gear in there as well how would one go about reaching that pull the motor? if I rotate the cam and inspect that gear all the way around and it seems fine as it was the one doing the damage to the dizz gear I hope what would be the best way to find the metal that came from that gear? Run an extending magnet down the shaft the do an oil change and flush down the diss shaft as well would this be enough?

BTW thanks guys for all the help on the RPM loss issue I am still working on that I will get some video footage of how it runs when I get it going again I have it taken apart do to this dizz deal and not wanting to ruin it but wanting to throw it together by this week end to hit the trails again meet some other 4x4s out here at the lake this week end and looking at getting a party to go.

first of all never leave you distributor loss again and you should be fine if you just put it back in and make it tight.

Thanks for the reply, that was the answer I was hoping for. I have reseated the distributor and not completely sure how the clamp sits. Flat surface to flat surface on the block .This would be with the lip of the washer/clamp under the dizz lip and holding it in place by turning the clamp into the dizz shaft casing. I rotated the Cam with a ratchet until air cam from #1 cylinder. I then used a screwdriver to reach TDC of the compression stroke. I placed the rotor facing the #1 post on the cap. Did I follow the correct steps to achieve a base timing to dial in with my light.

I think you did it right but your grammar and spelling sucks so bad I'm not sure...

Yeah I know I am bad about that. I will start cleaning up the post in order to make things legible. I get in a hurry running in and out messing with it, and my key board has been threw more spills than the ranger. It has also been torn apart as many times as areas of the motor so some springs fail and i miss keys / spacebar quite often.

This damn clamp. I can not get it to secure my dizz correct i have set TDC 3 times now seated the dizz 3 times aswell and put it all back togeather again 3 rd time. I go to start eng and adjust timing and it comes up and out do i have it upsidedown or what

First off you need to set it at 10 degrees btdc with the spout disconnected and the clamp goes just like it looks the tang goes down and the flat side goes up that way it clamps the dizzy down if you bent it i dont think you could it would still probably work just snug it to where you can barely move the dizzy get it timed correct and then cinch it down tite and then check your work

Well i feel success coming on this truck as far as the rpm loss issue. After getting the diz 180 and moving the wires 3 ahead the truck sounded right for the first time ever I thought it was running semi right before but now know the diffrence also no lifter noise during this run to diali the timing.
I did not get that far tho while waiting on it to warm u it died just stoped. i pulled the diz and the gear must not have had enough of the teeth left to do the job and it finished knocking it off so it was not spinning the rotor. I then had my old lady watch the internal gear while i rotated the eng to make sure there was no damage to that gear and there was not. I did how ever have a blooper tho a washer fell down into th diz shaft and i assume it is in the pan. Best method to reach it ? Can i flush somthing down the dizz shaft and hope to pull it out the oil drain hole if it will fit extender magnet mabey lol . If it made it to the bottem of the pan i would leave it there any need to worry about it getting into any thing? I am clear on the 10/12 deg BTDC with spout but thanks and i finaly figured the clamp out lol but with the gear damaged i dont belive itwas sitting all the way in.

Any one have a extra dizz gear they want to sell cheap . I just purchased the whole dizz at auto zone think i can get em to take t back ha ha ha

I'd pull one from a junkyard, $15.00 here and you get spare parts like tfi and hall effect sensor. Just find one that got rearended with decent paint and interior.

do you have a magnet?....

essential tools for these situations....

also don't forget that the diz drives the oil pump...that's why it has to drop ALL the way into the hole to engage correctly....
this is of course just MHO....

sometime it drops in..but doesn't go ALL the way in cuz the oil pump isn't aligned?....this is from a way distant memory....

It HAS to be seated....and grounded well....just an opinion...i'm open to correction of course....

best wishes...

well auto zone gave me a new one i was suprised as it was my fault. The new one dropped all the way down i guess the damaged gear was holding me out. It is running and timed now. I didnt test drive due to its getting late and the truck is loud.

Any information on retriving the washer from the pan ect lol i have a 2 ft pick up tool ima put a magnet on and try to fish it out. truck sounds diffrent now to say the least lol .

ALL crap here are some more questions. Can the dizz be 180 out start and be dialed into 10 deg before TDC is this possible. I set the #1 piston to TDC by feeling for air coming from the plug hole while using a rachet to roll the motor.I thought for sure it was 180 out due to the fact that it would not start i moved all wires ahead 3 and it started but runs very sick a few hundred yards and I thought i was going to end up walking home. Idle seems fine but This seems like a extream version of my rpm loss issues. The truck has no where near the power it did before.
