But Allan, not to try to force it on you, but these are all MINOR tasks that have been handled by FREE linux apps for years. I have no trouble ripping, editing, or creating audio tracks in ANY format, nor burning them to a CD with CD-TEXT, or mass tagging tracks. I have over 3400 MP3s created mostly from CDs. I play some windows games if I feel like it(don't do it much anymore). I think you could learn a lot from linux and never have an issue again.

so send me a usable copy of ubuntu, because all the sites I get it from it won't instal, then I need to reformat my Drive because it does this after it wipes out windows.

But I don't use Ubuntu. I can try to help you the best I can with your error message. Ubuntu is the windows of linux...it comes with a lot of crap to make it user friendly that slows me down. It, though, by far, is the cleanest and easiest to set up for new users and works well.
You must understand that Linux is but a Kernel. A single file that handles how your computer handles tasks and even contains many of its drivers. All the rest is add ons. There are hundreds of 'Linux OS's' aka 'distros'. don't let one poorly written one affect your experience.

if I go to install it then i don't have a computer to get on the internet with......... i am afraid of getting aids from all the downloads my wife has on her computer.

I prefer Knoppix over Ubuntu. It can run on a live cd.

Like smokey says, there is a Ubuntu Live CD and a Knoppix Live CD along with about a dozen others. It runs without installing. If it runs, the installation will work.
Try it.

did that twice, ran fine, went to install for a dual boot..... and it it gave an error message ........ the same one 3 times and locked up....... sat loked up for 3 hours or so, then it wouldn't boot in windows either, had to reformat my drive, since I got the new drive I don't have an XP back up on the D drive (since when it was replaced under warranty it came back HP light) and they never gave me the XP disc

its been a year since I tried, haven't wanted to try since I got my new drive (largely because I have no way to put XP back on since its the only computer in the house with XP, Teffie's has Vista and i have lost my copy of W2k) Somebody from the Ubuntu Forum sugested it didn't like my proc........ 1.8G AMD Truion 64........ supposed to be equivelent to a dual core.....

You have to be careful with the forums. About 85% are people who know nothing about anything just throwing crap in the dark to hope they get the right answer. It's a distro for new users, you can't expect much more.(I must add, it can be modified for more advanced users and is at its ROOT not a bad distro). However, I feel I can help you if 1)you really WANT the help and 2) you'll give it a fighting chance.
I've had bad experiences myself with ubuntu tests. I ran an alpha RELEASE that the partitioner was broke on and would actually reformat the entire DRIVE nomatter what options you set. To me, this was wreckless and careless for a 'release' or even a 'nightly' without proper warning other than "don't run this on your main PC". Sorry, but a partitioner that will wipe the entire drive shouldn't even be in a nightly release.

then what distro do you recomend? and i would need your Cell number...... would also need to find a copy of XP incase it didn't work and needed to start over.



I really hate XP but run some things that will only run on Windows.

I use arch linux. It's not for new users although its not particularly hard if you are willing to read. Its just so customizable you have to know what you want(and you won't). Ubuntu is great for starting with and even utilizing fulltime if you like it. I cannot give my cell out as I simply don't have the time to do one on one support at any point in my day. I can, however, give you my email which i'm very responsive to, at least at work(my g/f doesn't own a computer, so my offtime is not 'online'). You should honestly read into 'dual booting', which isnt hard. On XP, read about shrinking the partition. You only need about 10 gigs to start with to test out a distro. On vista, there is a built in resize tool. Clear up about 10 gigs of space, and you can dual boot ubuntu with windows. When you power on, it will ask you which you want to run. That way, while we fix your linux, you can use windows for the tasks you need done. There's TONS of step by step guides and documentation. I won't reinvent the wheel. You are a smart guy, if you want to learn, you will without force. I'll try my best to help you along the way..

alright, but i want to buy a copy, i am not going to trust a down loaded copy....... so what distro do you recomend where I can go to (insert lame big box store here) and buy a packaged copy that had might would have tech support?

Oh lord don't buy it. Download it. I don't even know of a store that has sold copies other than... Linspire years ago. It was horrible. Find a ISO of ubuntu(its what you download from the ubuntu site). It does a checksum on itself to make sure its valid. AND, there IS paid support from the parent company, canonical. Get the latest version(8.10) This is indicative of the year.month. October 2008. It's supported for 18 months...but paid support. Try me first.
