Have a bone stock well maintained 94 splash 5 speed v6 wondering about bolt on components to increase power/speed that would be suitable for someone just getting started in modifying

2 wd?

Best thing you can do is find your axle ratio (door tag, or the tag on the axle), and find one with a lower ratio (higher number)...

IE say you have 3.55's now....find a 4.10

Electric radiator fan conversion may gain a tiny bit. There's not really a lot of aftermarket support out there. Is it the 3.0l? Changing differential gearing gets the most bang for the buck. Doesn't add horsepower. Just changes how you use what you have and makes it feel better.

@Jgood
#1 lose the crankshaft driven fan/clutch for a 15" electric puller fan.
#2 K&N drop in air filter
#3 all synthetic fluids
#4 taper bored or fully bored throttle body
#5 free flow exhaust, plus ¼" from stock
#6 quality set of headers
#7 reduce the weight of your vehicle

Not one of the listed changes will "add power" but each of the items listed WILL reduce the load felt by your power plant... permitting it to operate at a higher level of efficiency.

A "power adder" is:
• custom reground cam with timing
• blower
• supercharger
• higher compression
• more powerful engine

I believe you may find that driving like a truck verses faster or quicker will help your vehicle to live longer, providing increased enjoyment. If that is not your goal, a 302 or 5.0l will fit in your engine bay with some modest modifications (not necessarily simple but many have done it), which while adding some weight, will provide more power if your intent is a hot rod or an off road brute.

@rusty ol ranger
* is correct, a properly matched set of gears and tire size can provide a mechanical advantage.
@ericbphoto
* is super correct as the biggest unnecessary load on these V6 engines is that crankshaft driven fan/clutch

One thing Gaz mentioned is really important. It depends which engine you have. The 3.0l makes max torque and hp around 3500rpm. So, if your driving it at lower rpms, it will feel more sluggish and weak. Wind it out a bit. No matter which engine you have, learning to drive it in its power band will help everything.

All good suggestions but I'd add one caution about K&N filters. If the filter isn't cleaned and re oiled periodically it will dry out and allow lots of dirt to be ingested. If you don't want to deal with that buy a quality paper filter and replace it as needed.

@19Walt93 could not be more correct; while a K&N air filter is guaranteed to last 1,000,000 miles, that life span is dependant on regular, required maintenance.

I have one that I've been using since 1989, looks just like new ..)
