So how many people here actually still go offroading now that gas is about to hit 4 bucks a gallon. I have pretty much stopped everything with my truck in the last month or 2. Its just to damn expensive to just go playing around right now. Im in the process of buying a gsx-r 600 sportbike in the next week so il be getting 60mpg roughly. Gonna be awesome as hell to only need to fill up like once every 2 weeks to a month. Plus only 20 bucks to fill the tank and thats with premium.

Diesel has been over $4.00 ($4.49 right now) for about 2 months. Im still drivin my truck. What the hell, it's not gonna get any better.

I'd go more if I had a place close by to go.

Gas may be high, but look at it this way,

At $4.00 a gallon you could get 10 gallons for $40.00. I can easily wheel my Ranger all day on 10 gallons. Hell, I can go Saturday and Sunday on that.

I can wheel all day and have a blast.

Now then, how much money would you spend going to a theme park for a day?

I have to admit though, gas prices suck. My daughter has been wheeling my Ranger here behind the house. I have a ditch behind the house with a big mount of dirt/rock on the other side of it. You can severly flex the truck out on it. She want's her own rig. I've been doing research on Suzuki Samurai's. I may get her one in another year and look in to the diesel swap using old cooking oils in it. I've wanted an alternative fuel rig, that will probably be it.

It costs me $10 in gas to mow. It costs me $10 a day to drive during the week.

Why would anyone worry about the cost of a wheeling excursion?

leaving in 7 days to make a trip to the badlands, 500 mile round trip @ 8 miles to the gallon

Gas prices do suck but I have no car payments, just a mortgage & a couple credit cards & the normal stuff, phone, insurance, utilities, etc. I've always had motorcycles & I've been riding mine except for when it snows so at 47 mpg, I save alot during the week compared to the truck. So when I put $60.00 in my tank to head up in the Rockies for a day of fun every weekend or every other weekend, it's worth it to me.

I can't let a truck like that sit in the driveway & not get used for it's intended purpose.............I'd get too bored.

I go every Sunday. I guess I'm pretty lucky, I work/live on a farm. I could walk to work, but ride a 4-wheeler and spend about $8 a month in gas for it.

The closest town of any size is 15 miles away and I only go to town once a week. Where I go wheeling is only about 7 miles from my house.

I spend $20 a week on gas which used to be a tad over 6 gal. But gas was $3.37(5.9 gal) last week and who knows what it will be now, so I'll have to start spending a little more. Diesel is over $4.

I'm not bragging. The down side is farm work doesn't pay very well. The up side is no rent and the boss pays the first $50 on the electric bill.

i put $30 in my truck and wheel for about three days haha u should have bought a 4 banger

I plan on going later today. I’m spoiled thought. Tons of wheelin close to base.

Well, this weekend imma be pickin up my 32 gallon fuel cell for the ranger, and it should be good for a week of drivin and a weekend of wheelin every time......

that just means its gonna cost me over $100 to fill up every single time

so you're gonna pay ~4g to save money on gas? you'll have to keep your bike for a LONG time before it starts to pay off, plus you have insurance every month, a 150 dollar tire every 3-5k miles, 40 dollar oil changes every 2k miles, etc. it doesn't really add up. good luck getting 60mpg outta that gixxer too lol. on the plus side, it'll only take ~14 bucks to fill with premium :woot:

as for wheeling I try not to pay attention to gas prices. building my truck and wheeling it is essentially my life. if it weren't for that I'd be spending money on other types of entertainment. as for price per gallon, how much is a gallon of milk? and that's a 100% renewable resource.

Like they've been saying, it's not going to get better. Might as well hit the dirt anyway. I would go out regardless, accept that where as I used to go only about 5 miles to wheel I now have to go 20 miles. So it's cut down a little bit.

I will actually have the bike for a long time. Thats the plan anyway. 40 dollars for an oil change? I think not. It doesnt take 5-6 quarts to fill it. 20 bucks every 2k miles for an oil change with filter. And yes the current chicago crowd with sportbikes and the gixxer are all claiming between 45-60mpg depending on how ya drive. Im expecting at least 50 cuz im just learning to ride now so I not gonna be doing a wheelie at 70mph or anything stupid yet. O and 400 for insurance. Geico is by far the cheapest place to get insurance and its a government company so ya. No worries there.

As soon as fall hits im gonna be back on the ranger to finish it for the trails. Regear and eventually new tires

There are more reasons to get a bike than milage alone...

good luck getting anymore than 30k out of it before a rebuild. and yes, 40 dollars an oil change with filter. you're trying to keep an engine alive that will see 8k+ rpm everyday. don't think you can get away with using your run of the mill 10w-30. the oil I run is 8.89 a quart, takes 3.9 quarts to fill it plus filter is right around 40 bucks.

you may get away with 50mpg. I get around 38mpg, with a full system exhaust and pcIIIusb. speaking of the chicago boys, I just rode with a few this last weekend. they came down to peoria to kill the streets.
