I have a 1994 Ranger with the A4LD auto transmission and would like to do a COMPLETE fluid change,
first I would take the pan off and that would drain off about 3 quarts,
then install a new filter,
then reattach the pan & new gasket,
then disconnect RETURN line going to the transmission from the cooler and
then add hose to a bucket with NEW fluid,
then disconnect hose going to the cooler from the transmission-- put that hose into an empty bucket to catch the OLD fluid being pushed out
start engine -- let the new fluid be sucked in and the old fluid be pushed out

Is that the idea??

Total capacity for the A4LD is 8 to 9 quarts??

Thanks.

Yay I can be helpful! When I get the money, Ill be doing this too.

1. Make sure engine is completely cooled.
2. Remove the mounting bolts from front and sides of fluid pan.
3. Loosen rear bolts approx 4 turns.
4. Carefully pry the fluid pan open, dont remove it completely. Let it drain.
5. Remove bolts, pan, and gasket.
6. Clean gasket surface of transmission(not pan).
7. Drain fluid from transmission pan, clean with solvent, dry with compressed air.
8. Remove filter from mount inside trans.
9. Install new stuff. Clean the pan(and magnet if there is one).
10. I believe you then tighten the bolts to 96-120 in-lbs of torque.
11. Add trans fluid.
12. Let engine idle, run from Park to the other ones ending at park.
13. Add fluid as needed.
14. This is from the Haynes Manual.
15. 3 quarts for auto trans. Add 1/2 pint as needed to correct level on dipstick.
16. After overhaul(?), approx 5-6 more quarts will be needed.

If you need anything else I have the manual. There is a forum member here who gave a link to download the manual for free but I cant remember his name.

I read a little closer you can disconnect the return line to the tranny and push the new oil through the cooler but the return line goes straight to the main bushings in the tranny there is no suction on the cooler lines. You want that oil to get to the mains as quick as possible.

Personally, if I was this interested in getting all the fluid changed I would ask around at local shops until I found one that uses BG flush equipment and then get the trans flushed out through the cooler lines.
