I had the 3-4 shift problem so I bought the solenoid and took the valve body off and there is no 3-4 shift solenoid. I talked to a guy who has been working on trannys all his life and he said it should not have one because it is a hydraulic tranny the only electric thing is the TCC solenoid. He told me to adjust the band and try that if it dont work than the band is broke. can ne one help me out because im puzzled about this. Thanks in advance.

Greetings,
The 3-4 shift solenoid wasn't used until the 1988 model year. Thunderbird Turbo Coupes were the first to utilize then the Aerostar.

Your '87 would only have the TCC solenoid.

Used to see many "no fourth" problems. Some were caused by the catalytic convertor heat causing the OD servo piston to harden and not seal. Used to cause servo cover leaks also.

If you attempt to service the servo, make sure the the band adjustment screw is free. Do a band adjustment first. If the screw won't tighten up, you many have a broken band or a strut out of place. If the band adjustment is successful but still no forth gear, then remove the servo cover and piston while tightening the band adjusting screw. You must keep tension on the system, or you may drop a strut. If servo seals are hardened it must be replaced. While you have it out, check that you have the correct servo and cover.

If you have any more questions please feel free to ask
