So the A4LD finally took a poop in my truck.

All right, I'll start from the beginning. It has done this for a while now, but before it wasn't so bad. When the trans was cold and you were in 3rd or OD and gave it gas to make it downshift it would just act like you threw it in neutral and rev up the engine. I would always let off the gas when it did this as pictures of streams of trans fluid and small metal bits filled my head. Again, it would only do this every once in a while and when it was cold.

I left work today, and it was working fine. About 3 miles from home, It was in OD going about 45mph and I went to pass somebody, only to have the engine quickly hit redline and not go anywhere. I let off, and it clicked back into 3rd then OD no problem like it did before, but it had been driven for about 20 minutes now and should be up to a good temperature.

I messed around with it and it would do it every time. Hmm. When I turned to go down my road, I hit the gas and the engine revved up only to have the truck not accelerate. Great, I thought.

So I dropped it into D (or just 3rd) and it took right off no problem. If I keep it in D it shifts normally no problem, and will kick down from third all the way to first under hard acceleration just fine. If I am cruising in third about 45mph and click it into OD, it acts like it goes into neutral for a second, then goes into OD, but as soon as it kicks down out of OD it acts like it's in neutral again and will not accelerate until I put it into D, 2 or 1. All other gears work fine, park, reverse, neutral, D, 2, 1. If you are sitting there and put the shifter into OD, you can feel it pull like it goes into gear. If you give it a bit of gas, it pulls a little bit, moves just an inch, but a few seconds is as long as I dare do that.

I checked the trans fluid, it seems to be overfilled. The fluid is still kind of red, it doesn't smell excessively burnt, just like old trans fluid. Any ideas on what might be wrong? This trans has 186,000mi on it now.

I'm having the EXACT same problem with my 4R44E. Bringing it to the shop tomorrow ,but I'd like to see some replies on this before I get jerked around at the shop.

Thats a lot of miles on that trans but I wouldn't say its dead yet!

I would maybe change the fluid since it seems to be overfilled. Other than that..I know that the OD is a solenoid on some of the AL4D's. I wish I could point you in the right direction on that but I'm really not sure..Maybe me mentioning it will help point you in a good direction!

I think the TCC lockup is still working, as it locks up in third gear. Also, the faster you are going the better it goes into OD when you move the shifter up there. At about 55mph it pops into OD no problem, so I think the planetary is still fine, and probably the clutches as it dosen't seem to slip once it's in OD. It seems like when you put the shifter into OD the only gear that works IS OD.
