I have a buddy who is looking into buying a 98 civic with 25x,xxx miles on it for
2,000$

I think its a mistake, but he says its better for gas mileage. Whaduya all think?

Also does anyone have car fax?

thanks

i wouldnt pay more than $1,000 for a 10 year old car with over 200k on the clock.

if he can get them talked down that far then id say go for it. gas is supposed to hit $4 a this summer...

Too many miles. Honda is good stuff, but worn out is worn out.

If he does im gonna take a rock sledge to it

if i did that to every civic out here like that it would be a full time job :P, EVERY civic out here is like that, and they get pissed when my ranger is faster then there car

Its too much. Sure a 98 around 100K miles would got for $2k. But over 200k miles, nope. See if he can get a lower price. But if it was me, I would rather spend the money on a car that I don't have to put alot into fixing up. Rather than a cheap car that will cost me money down the road.

yup, thats what I told him- I thinks it gonna die soon

I would never buy a civic regardless of the miles

does anyone have carfax so we can check to see if its been in a car accident?

Personal experience is that the electric auto choke in those years are problematic. He will get less MPG than expected with years between 86-91. $2000 is way too much, $1000 is more reasonable. Miles on those cars mean much less than many seem to think.
I have had many Honda cars that have exceeded 300k miles. Current Honda is a 2002 accord with 298k on it. Still runs great and gets 33-34 MPG and it aint no damned ricer. I have also bought used Hondas that never lasted too long due to prior abuse and lack of proir maintenance.
This is in a desert air type area, very dry. Any car will have issues with rust at almost 20 years old.
With fuel prices expected to rise, why is it being sold? I would not sell a fuel efficient vehicle if it ran good with fuel prices expected to rise. Something to think about.

Hondas are good cars, period. When people start screwing around with them and lowering suspensions and adding N2o my opinion changes dramatically. The car is worth $1000-$1200 and no more than that. A car like that can go a loooong time if it hasn't been modified beyond recognition. I get Hondas in the shop all the time with mega miles on them and they run fine. If I see lowered suspension and banged up ground effects, I give the car a really close look. More often then not, there are "issues". Just tell your friend to be careful and really check the car over.

250,000 miles is nothing for todays rigs.

both of my '89 escorts are over 200,000 and they still both run fine. ive even hit 39MPG in one of them.

Honda's hold their value. If you do a quick look up on kelly's blue book for a 98 4dr 5spd lx civic in fair condition.Private party price is around 2900.00.

KBB doesnt mean anything. Mess around with different milages in it. It doesnt change over 100K miles. Theres a big difference between a car with 100K and 250K.....
