Hello all. Yeah another new guy but I would like some info and looking through most of prior forums not really sure where to start. I have a 1931 model A that I would like to possibly use a 8.8 or a 9” rear in. I’ve got the original banjo axle but wish to use a 302 and c6 transmission and not sure what direction to take. The model A rear body width is 43 inches and the axle I have off the ranger is 50 so 3” on each side seems like a good fit. I got a ranger bed in trade for a paint job I did but never pulled the axle out till past weekend. The old man didn’t know what it was, He

welded a tongue on the front and used it as a trailer. So if anyone can help I sure would appreciate it. My other truck I have is a 80 f100 ranger xlt. It’s axle is too wide or I would of just used that.

WMS = wheel mounting surface, rear axle width is measured that way

Ranger rear axles were 56.5" WMS-WMS wide 1983 to 1992
58.5" wide 1993-2011, so 2" wider

7.5" or 8.8" were the same

WMS is about 3.5" out from backing plate, so 7" total, making 50" about right, if that how you measured, for a 1992 or older axle

You can put a mark on the pinion flange, and top of both tires
Then roll the axle and count how many times the flange spins around for 1 full turn of the tires
If flange spins 3.75 times then its a 3.73 ratio
Just over 4 times its a 4.10 ratio
Under 3.5 then its a 3.27 ratio

I found this info here so I’m still researching looks more like the axle I have is a 7.5 so this Wednesday when I get back to my county house I’ll do what you said. Thanks a lot Ron!!

You might be on the wrong forum altogether...I would be lurking hot rod/custom forums.

Hey Eddo I’m on a few old ford forums but seeing this was a Ranger forum and I removed the rear end out of a Ranger bed I thought this to be the place. Plus I couldn’t even come close to getting an answer in hot rod stuff for anything after 1965. I was told by an old gear head that the old Ranger rear ends were a good size for the Model A that if I got a full size 9” I’d have to cut the axle down get new shafts or get deep well wheels to accommodate the width to fit into the rear fenders. But thanks for the advice.

we love anything mechanical, so bring it on.
the 7.5 axle is fine for lower power requirements. if you're in need of a stronger axle the Ranger version of the 8.8 is the exact same dimensions and only 15 lbs heavier.
either axle can be fitted with 10" rear drums, or Mustang rear discs can be adapted.

in the true spirit of hot roddin' grab some parts and make something.

to answer your original question of "where" there is an axle sub-forum on this site.

Thanks PJ I’ll be researching the rest of the week as I’m in no big hurry just hoped what I had might work. The gear ratio I’ll check on later this week as Ron suggested and that will get me closer to an understanding of what I’m looking for. At the same time it’s what I’ve got and I believe in plug and play hot roding.
If it works drive it till the wheels fall off and try again.

I'll tell you so you don't have to hear it from sarge or eric..

Go stand in the corner.

We have a member currently building a model a you know 🤦‍♀️

Edit: it's @Ramcharger90

You might get lucky and find a tag on one of the differential cover bolts. The code on the tag will yell you what axle you have. Here's a helpful screenshot from our axle tags and codes article in the tech section.

Where's my hammer?

He asked a question about a Ford truck axle. There is no better place to be for that question than right here with us.

I found an existing article here on this site that went into detail but you nailed what I need to look for.
You guys are great wish I came here long ago.

302 with a c6 ought to drop right onto that axle with maybe a shortened drive shaft, or a jeep shaft. Lots of people use cherokee front driveshafts when putting the c6 into stuff.

I did when i out a 302 and c6 into my wrangler with a d35. The ford rear end might not even need one of those u-joints that fits two different size yokes that i had to use
