Has any one ever converted your A/C comp. into an air comp. for an on board air supply, not something i would use alot, maybe to air up a flat offroading etc.I heard its been done but having trouble finding useful info on how to convert it

Lots of guys have done it. not much to it really. you need to add oil to the air on the way in and separate it from the air on the way out. pressure switch and some sort of tank and that's it. they will air up a five gallon tank in about fifteen seconds at idle. If you add a high idle position you can run all kinds of air tools. I had such a system on my b2 for ten years with zero problems. york compressor is better though if you can find one for the right price. There's an article in the tech library about doing it with a york compressor.

You have to find a way to oil it. I've seen lots of people make these but that pump needs to be lubed or it will die. I've seen them die, too. A nitrogen tank is a better bet. All the compressed gas you need for tools and inflation for a month in a space smaller than that half-assed compressor can push air into.

I've been through 4 stock style compressor pumps with a lubricator installed right before it. They just don't last.

good points,i use to have a truck i bagged years ago, before i owned a 4x4,so i have a little knowledge about these type of compressors, and the nitrogen tank is a good idea.i want something that will be tucked away, other than one of those portable compressors.plus i only want it for airing up tires offroading

I would look into a 12v compressor then such as one from Viar.

I think thats what i will do i priced some and they are reasonably priced, thanks

from what i've seen, the yorks are the exception to the lube rule, as IIRC it has an oil system, and doesn't rely on the refrigerant to oil it

hey, slightly off topic, can anyone calculate how many 33x12.5x15" tires, could be inflated with 48cui of 3000psi air? if it's 4, close to 4, or higher, i'll explain why i ask... or even, how many, it could reinflate from 10psi to 35psi

alternatively you can use CO2 to inflate your tires... we have a few gas stations around here that use CO2 instead of air

I think you're right about the York compressors. CO2? I've never heard of that before. Lots of people use N2 because the molecules are bigger than most in plain air. It will keep your tires properly inflated for longer.

yeah, i guess the setup is cheaper to have co2 bottled to enflate tires with, than maintaining a compressor... of course co2 is a liquid when compressed, so a scuba sized tank of co2 fills a lot of tires... and those are cheap to fill

i'll be driving past one on saturday, if i remember, i'll stop in there and get a pic of the sign for you

Weezl, I know what your thinking (I had the same idea) and i doubt it would fill just one tire. I had 900 psi left in my tank, and It barely moved my 235/75/15 flat tire. The tank emptied too quick...

yeah, but 3000psi vs 900psi... idk.... i know a scuba tank (3000psi also) will fill tonnes of tires, and run air tools...

This is true. But a scuba tank is about 12 times the size of a paintball tank. I have 4 scba tanks that I took out of service, they are rated @ 2216 psi each, and will fill a few tires. We use them on the rescue squad's truck to inflate airbags designed to lift objects. There is an adapter that screws onto the tank that's a set 150 psi output, perfect for operating air tools or inflating tires. Refilli.g the ranks are free for me as we have a refilling station at hq...

How many tires, do you know?

Sent from somewhere naughty!

I haven't actually tried, but with the volume it has (about the size of a 10lb welders co2 tank) it should fill at least four 33's from 10psi to 35psi. My problem isn't filling four 33's, my problem is inflating 47's...
