My truck ran fine when I parked it,. Next day, it wouldnt start. Normally, the fuel pump is pretty loud. Now, you can hear it barely whining, and it sounds like fuel is running back into the tank, sounds like water running.
A mechanic friend checked it and says it needs a fuel pump. Which is probably true. But the sound like fuel dribbling pretty heavily back into the tank bugs me. Just doesnt seem right if the pump is bad. Any advice? Thanks, Nathan

bad fuel pressure regulator dumping fuel back to tank?

whats fuel pressure like? did you check voltage to pump relay etc....?

Thats kinda what I was thinking. But the pump is running so quietly you have to strain to hear it. Before, it was pretty loud. But yes, it sounds like its pumping at low pressure/high volume and falling back into the tank. If I leave the switch on for a minute before trying to start, it will hit a little. Like its pushing a tad of fuel to the motor, but not much.
I have no way to test pressure. And I can only afford the "bare" pump ($114), not the whole assembly (over $200). Bad situation. Thanks for the input!
Nathan

I should add, I did check the fuses, and I put a new fuel pump relay in it, but no effect....

After doing some reading, is it possible the fuel filter could have stopped up completely, all at once (as in came apart inside, etc.)? I have a brand new one sitting here, just never have put it on. Guess I could replace that first and give it a try. But thats probably just wishful thinking.
I just checked fuel pressure at the Schrader valve. With the key on, it would shoot gas about 2 inches high. Thats the only way I have of checking pressure. But thats obviously not enough pressure. Checked and even swapped out a couple of relays in the box under the hood. Nothin.

Pump is replaced and truck is running. Actually, the pump was still good. The reason it sounded like a faucet running back into the tank was because the rubber hose from the pump to the top plate of the assembly had blown the side out of it. Could have just replaced the hose, but we went ahead and replaced the pump too.
So let this be a lesson. If you hear gas trickling pretty hard back into the tank with the key on, its probably that hose.

glad you found it

Thanks. I knew something just didnt seem right with that loud trickling noise going on! And it wasnt right. My experience is, when a pump goes bad, its dead. As a hammer. The mechanics (I wound up with 2) had never seen anything like it either.
Otherwise, everybody says pull the bed, but they dropped the tank and it took them about an hour to do the whole job here in the parking lot. Not bad :)
