Is the oil pan removal process straight forward or is it complicated by having to remove transmission first?

From what I remember, the pan is independent of the transmission in every way. I didn't have to do any special sealing or anything when I replaced the engine in my 1998.

Now whether you have to lift the engine or not in order to get the pan out, that I don't know.
