I have a 98' 4 cyl. it does not have a tach. which vehicles have the correct one for a donor? Is it possible to keep my mileage on the donor? Any info would be verry good. I'm starting from point A here.

The mazda trucks had factory tach, this is what I did...and the odometer is removable, with a little patience...

u can get a Ranger cluster with tach, a mazda truck or even an explorer sport trac one, with the nice white gauges.

and yes the odometer can me swapped or rolled to your current mileage

I would think you need one from a 4 cylinder. as for size, I don't think it matters if it the 2.3 or 2.5, I don't think one from a 6 cylinder would work.

no, it can be from any engine, the ECU sends a tach pulse.

OP, for cheaper, you can just get a sunpro and hook it to the ECU's tach signal, it'll take maybe an hour tops.

as of 95 ranger and mazda were the same, 100% bolt in, no mods needed.

why not buy a sunpro tach from parts store for 35 bux? I did for my 92 and loved it. You can mount it anywhere so it wont interfere with vies, and its simple to wire up. It also has a stupid movable lens with a needle for shift point reminder.

As far as the interchange between a '97 & 98', not sure. "98-'03' would work for the OP, no wiring changes between motor sizes. I myself have always like the intemidating look of an external tach.

Prob wants his truck to look stock and not have a gauge that looks out of place.

.

how long did this take you? does engine size matter?

maybe 30 mins to take the old one and put the new one back in, and 20-30 mins to fix the odo and calibrate the speedo. u need to calibrate it after taking it apart for fixing the odo.
theres a how to on the tech library for that.

engine size doesnt matter. my truck is a 99 2.5 with tach, i just swapped clusters for the white gauges, and went with a 01 sport-trac 4.0 cluster, and works fine. only change is on the reset fuel light, its called check fuel cap on the 01+ trucks.
it doesnt matter if it comes from an auto or 4wd either. mine came from an auto 4wd.

my 99 cluster went to my bro's 00 3.0 that had no tach, it works fine on his truck also.

seems like from 95-97 to 98-03 a couple lights were relocated. so going 98-03 for the cluster will work fine(only exception is on the fuel reset light).

the look of my cluster

i got my 00 clutster for 25 bux. and it was simple to install. plug and play, and i changed my mileage over.

now if it was just that easy for my 85

What do i need to do to switch over the Odo? what is this fuel reset light you are talking about? does you cluster have the fuel almost empty dummy light?

ull need this
http://www.therangerstation.com/Magazine/winter2009/gauge_removal.htm

and this
http://www.therangerstation.com/Magazine/spring2009/odometer.htm

under the check engine light, theres a reset fuel switch light, it goes on if your fuel shut off switch gets triggered. On 01+ trucks instead of reset fuel switch, it reads check fuel cap. the cluster works fine, it just says a different thing.

and when my fuel is low or near empty the check gauges light comes on, its the round light on the left, on top of the temp gauge
