My question is.....the elect. connection to the cam synchro sensor, the 98 has a different 3wire connection. Should i just splice in the newer plug? The wires aren't the same colors on both plugs.

No, they are two different kinds of sensors, so 94 computer won't "understand" '98 CPS signal.

You need to swap out that sensor, not sure if you need to swap whole synchro housing, but you may need to, or buy a new one, they do wear out every 100k or so

3 wire is a Hall effect sensor
2 wire is a Variable reluctance sensor
These are totally different signal types there is no conversion, or at least none that would be cheaper than a new sensor and housing($40)

1994 ranger must be in/from Calif.

will the housing from the 94 fit into the 98 motor, i thought one was longer than the other

I think the oil pump sleeve was a little longer on the '98, but it should still slide in and work fine.
You do need to time these.

If there is one near by you could have an auto parts store pull out both models and compare them side by side, but I don't think there is much of a different mechanically.

You also have to change the Fuel rail and injectors, '98 had 65psi no return line, '94 35psi with return line

Staying tuned to this, because we have a 98,4.0 to swap into my 93, 4.0 Plan is to put the old harness on the newer engine.

1990-1993 4.0ls didn't have CPS, '94 4.0l models didn't come with a CPS in general, 1995 and up did because of the computer change from EEC-IV to EEC-V.
I think only Calif. sold 4.0ls had the CPS required in 1994.

Your 1993 4.0l doesn't have a CPS so computer won't require that signal, you can either not connect it, or replace it with the oil pump drive and plug used on non-CPS 4.0ls

Fuel pressure still needs to be addressed

Hmmm? this one has a return line, and same injectors, I did get the older style sensor installed, and yeah, the shaft is shorter. Should work fine though! Next is modifying the heat riser to the 94 manifold, the 98's exhaust manifold has the fitting in a different location, wtf?....Home stretch, i see light!

Could be an early '98, 1998 is the year they changed the fuel system to returnless.
