1997 Ranger 4x2 with a 2.3L. Can anyone tell me if a A4LD-E can be swaped with any of the newer 4R44E transmissions. I know that the A4LD was not supposed to be in this truck, but by the VIN # that is what Ford says is in it. Any help would be appreciated.

In Europe, the 4R44E was known simply as the A4LDE (with the "E" referring to the electronic enhancements to the basic A4LD design) and was briefly used in the Ford Scorpio.

You have a 4r44e.

Swap

I am being told that I can only use a transmission from a 97. Is this true? If I can use one from a different year what would need to be swapped?

You can use a newer trans, you just need to swap over your valve body.

I don't know the exact year range, but I do know that the basic physicals of the Bordeaux transmissions have changed very little from 85 to 2010. The biggest changes were in the removal of some shift springs and replacing them with solenoids, and changes to the valve body.
