We have a 97 f150, with a 5.4 auto 2wd. The brakes were giving us problems, they would grab extremely hard and fling you forward. I took a look at them one day and the driver side pads were completely destroyed and there was a huge gouge in the rotor, the passenger side was ok though.

So both sides got new rotors and pads, repacked bearing and new grease seals.

Fast forward a week and an half, the brakes make a horrible clunk, the driver side is starting to get grooves on the rotor, but the passenger side doesnt look like a pad has even touched it.

I am going to tear it apart tomorrow and see whats going on, me and my brother think the caliper is going out or is broke now.

Here is a vid of the noise the brakes make, it happenes with light and hard pressure.

So what do you guys think is the problem? :dunno:

Calipers are most likely for the brake pad issue.
While you are at it, flush the system. Water contamination of the brake fluid can cause grabby brakes.

Well i pulled off the tires today, the passenger side caliper looks ok, the rotor turns fine with no pressure to the caliper, but will not budge when the brake pedal is pressed. The driver side is a whole other story, the rotor with no pressure will not budge, and the caliper does nothing when pressure is applied via the brake pedal. It seems to be stuck at full extension all the time.

Also i figured out the clunk, somehow one of the bolts holding on the caliper bracket fell out, i have no idea how but a trip to ace fixed that.

I had a brake line on my Ranger, it seperated on the inside so it acted like a check valve. Fluid could go to the caliper but when the pressure came off the little flap closed and blocked it off and held it on.

Keep an eye out for that too. :icon_thumby:

How would i be able to check for that since i cant see the inside of the brake line?

If your new caliper doesn't release either. :icon_thumby:

Did you check for flow coming out of the brake line? I read somewhere (maybe even on TRS) that they had an issue with the brake line rusting and blocking the line on the early years of this F150.

I'm pretty much planning on replacing all of that stuff on mine in the next few months. My drivers side caliper occasionally grabs a little harder than the passenger side. It's usually after it's sat over the weekend or longer.

Well replacing the brake hose seemed to fix the problem :icon_thumby:

Omfg!!

Well we thought we had gotten it totally fixed, but i guess we were wrong , dad complained about a clunk so he stopped driving it. Well i took a look at it today and it didn't go so well. The passenger side was fine, it is wearing normally, but the driver side is another story.

I pulled off the hub cap, it was full of dust and the dust cap fell off :icon_surprised:.

So i tear into it and this is what i found

Spindle

What is left of the smaller outer bearing and race,

So I've got a project, hopefully i can figure out why the driver side brakes are ****ing up so much :annoyed:

:icon_surprised: Holy nuts Dude! :icon_surprised:

That doesn't look so pretty. It also looks expensive.

You might pull apart the other side too, while the PS wears a little faster than the DS (thanks to potholes usually being more towards the curb) one side doesn't roll much farther than the other.
