Wow! Of all the forums I belong to this is the rudest responces I have ever gotten !!
A simple "just do a search" would have been a better choice!!!
Then again,,, it must be because this is a Ford Forum and you are Ford guys?
Then again,, Bush is hungry?
Naw, dude. You were just lazy. That' what I took mild offense to. Did you at least introduce yourself in the "Introduction" part of the forum. It's a family here, although we are dysfunctional.

And of all the "other forums," how have you not done a basic search on there as well? A simple Google search will show that you are supposed to get anywhere from 17/21 MPG, roughly. Shit, even a Google search on Rangers usually brings up TRS!
That was a good way to generalize a Ford group and get your answer by insulting us.
The Ranger Station, Ford Ranger Forums, Explorer Forums, or Ranger Power Sports are the top 4 websites for Ford Rangers, and many of us are on those forums as well.

this is probably one of the best posts, and when i say best, i mean, most useful, most sincere, most productive, and best worded post, that i have read on the internet yet
It was good & sincere, I'll agree. I dunno about "the best" though.
A lot of people have sand in their cracks lately... here's why you're getting these responses. (I'm with them 100%)
It doesnt seem like you searched. Youre not the only one, we've been getting hit everyday lately with simple questions that can be answered very quickly with a short search.
We, the collective of the forum put a lot of time and money out over the years:
-We buy these products, we try them and find out if they do or dont work.
-We put the time in testing, and replacing parts to figure out what causes these issues.
-We spend more time writing threads, and having discussions about said repairs and products.
-We spend more time answering questions in these threads to help others out when they get stumped on a similar problem.
-We consolidate it into one place (the tech library) and provide a link at the top of every page.
-We log on every day and try to help someone we never even met out.
-A good amount of us repair cars for a living, we then log in here, and tell others how to do the job that puts food on our table. We are basically telling you how not to have to pay us to do the job.
All we ask in return is for you (not just you, all the recent noobs with similar questions) to search first and ask questions later.
Spend a little time searching, come back with a good question. Show us that you have searched. Tell us that you saw in this thread that it could be your air filter is clogged and you replaced it. Explain that this thread mentioned a full tune-up, but that was done a few weeks back. Tell us that another thread said to check your O2 sensors and see if they are getting lazy, but you dont have a scanner to check them. When you ask a simple question, show us that you did put the time in and arent asking for a handout. We really are a great bunch of guys (more or less), and are willing to help anyone out at any time day or night, but you have to put out some effort too.
I definitely feel you on this. It's frustrating. And many feel entitled to get an accurate, immediate, and FREE answer. Why is college so expensive? Because you are paying for knowledge.
Sno, the OP did not make an obvious effort.
The 4.0L from what i understand like it cruising RPM right around 2600 to 2700.
mine seems to like that RPM. I get about 17 to 19.5 mix driving, 5 speed,4x4, 4:10 on 30inch tires.
It seems that no one with a auto ever gets good MPG.
Keep it well tuned, check tire pressure, and check for codes
Ranger #1 --- '97, 4.0L, 2WD, automatic, 3.08 axle ratio, 225 tires ==> Got ~20-21 mpg hwy, ~18 mpg city
33" all-terrains tires ==> Got ~21-22.5 mpg hwy, ~17 mpg city
Ranger #2 --- '97, 4.0L, 4WD, manual, 4.88 axle ratio, 35" tires ==> Get ~18-19 mpg hwy, ~14 mpg city
(cruise 2700 RPM @ 65 mph)
Go through your truck, and fix everything. Change all of your filters (from air to fuel), change all of your fluids (from transmission to oil to t-case), clean out your fuel lines, change your plugs & ignition wires, air up your passenger tires to 32 PSI, and replace & regrease your wheel bearings & other seals. Have to checked to see if your brakes are in proper working order and not binding?
Crap and excess weight (like tools, welders, jacks, bags of sand(?)) can weigh your down, while a malfunctioning holy exhaust with O2 sensor codes in higher elevation and colder temperatures will increase the amount of fuel youre dumping into your motor.
Maybe the search feature could be made more noticeable somehow?
Back on topic, I got 21.5 MPG in my '97 4.0L. That was a 4x4 and 5 speed stick.
+1

And that MPG is about right.
Just gotta tell the noobs to search sometimes, besides if you want help try helping yourself first.
no one wants to hold anyones hand over something so simple
Armadillon mentioned a tune and I'd love to believe his numbers but i'm skeptical he could almost double his HP and MPG with just a tune...
Killjoy, I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic.

all we are asking is make an effort to find your answer, before asking us to do the work for you...
i'm going to see right through the bullshit and know you didn't try google, or the search on this page...
How do i lift my truck for cheap?
