are the 96 explorer t-cases the same as the 96 rangers t-cases? did explores come with 3.0 engins with 4r443 tranys or just 4.0's with 5r55e tranys and 5.0 with what ever tranys they use?

I have a 99 ranger with a 4.0 and a 5r55e. need a t-case out of a 96 ranger because of the vss placement. I have access to a few explorers and was just seeing if I can get some info before I get down and dirty. hopefuly this make sence to you all. thanks for reading.

The Explorer never came with a 3.0. Period. Also, not really sure how that was relevant to your overall question.

A 96 Explorer case will work if it didn't have automatic 4wd (and I mean automatic automatic, not electronic automatic).

I was just curious about the 3.0 thing I figured they didn't. What is "automatic automatic"?

Any ranger or explorer t case (except maybe the AWD version) should bolt up just fine. I have a 94 ranger 1354M in my 99. The VSS isn't a problem cause its in your axle anyways so as long as the sensor is in or you make a good plug so the fluid doesn't escape in the t case an older model should work just fine.

The Ex case wont work. Its a 44-05 not a 13-54.

Yes, it will bolt up, but you wont have 4wd. The 44-05 uses a magnetic clutch to engage 4wd, the shift motor only works the high/low fork. If you get it to work, you will only have 2wd, 2wd and 2wd/low.

I think kevery swaped to a older Dana 60 that does not have the vss in it, that why hes looking for a t-case with it. I just kept looking in the local yards till i found mine.

If the Explorer has what Adsm is talking about, it will have an "auto" selection on the dash.

You don't want this:

You need it to look like this:

I have a 1354 in my shed that came out of a 95-97 Explorer my buddy parted out.

Oh... well any 96 and older would probably work then. But i thought they had switched to the Rear VSS by 95/96. Hmmm.

Wait no. nevermind the older ones are cable driven vs the newer ones that are electronic.

Not if its a 13-54. The Ex used the 13-54 from 91-94 on all models. They used it again on the sport and sport trac starting in 2001. The 44-05 was used on all v6 models from 95-00.

The difference in the 95-96 was that it had a true 2wd, 4 auto, 4low. The 97+ had 4auto, 4high, 4low. This was accomplished with a program change in the GEM, not with a 13-54 t-case.

well! I guess I got my answer and then some. ford78 knows whats going on. I have access to a bunch of explorers and not alot of rangers so I just wanted to make sure before I started striping stuff down that it will work for me you know what i mean. Thanks everyone.

Soon, I blew the trans yesterday, so its off the road now. The SOHC has taken out 2 4R55Es so far.

I saw the Explorer he pulled it from, it was without a doubt a 95-97 Explorer.

The Tech Library says:

The tech library is wrong. The Ex came with Control-trac in '95. If its Electric shift, its a 44-05. The '95 Ex GEM can not control a 13-54. They are shifted different.

got it
