96 explorer t-case vs 96 ranger t-case?

The Ex case wont work. Its a 44-05 not a 13-54.

Yes, it will bolt up, but you wont have 4wd. The 44-05 uses a magnetic clutch to engage 4wd, the shift motor only works the high/low fork. If you get it to work, you will only have 2wd, 2wd and 2wd/low.

Unless you are a sneaky fooker (like me) and want to build an electronic AWD Ranger.

To "play dirty" and do this you use a 44-05 but you don't control it with the Explorer circuitry, but instead use AWD Aerostar electronics to engage the clutch

This way you get the "hands off" user transparency of the Aerostar AWD system with the RIGID rear drive power path of the Explorer T-case...

The Aerostar Dana TC28 T-case uses a planetary center diff to divide power front and rear and will literally roll away in park if one wheel loses traction.

(I have an aerostar and I won't leave my driveway with it unless I'm SURE that the parking brake works AND I have my big rubber wheel chock)
