Hello all, just found this forum and looking for some info. I did some searching and didn't find anything that matched, so here goes…
I have a 1996 Ford Ranger 4L V6, 2WD w automatic transmission, ~145k miles.
A few days ago I got back from a road trip of ~200 miles. The truck drove fine, and then sat overnight. I was driving in the mountains, so I did turn the OD on and off a few times as terrain required. All was fine.
When I started it the next morning I had a near-constant high pitched squeal as soon as the engine started. I drove a few miles around town then parked it. The squeal diminished from constant to maybe 20% of the time. Took it to the shop today, thinking it was some belt problem. I hear the squeal now even less, maybe 5% of the time (maybe I have worn through whatever was squealing!
).
My mechanic investigated and did not find any belt/pulley issues, and thinks it might be coming from the torque converter. He's hesitant to flush the tranny because it might accelerate any failure. I'm hesitant to pay the labor to drop the tranny without more info.
The truck runs and shifts fine. My gas mileage has been normal. No strange smells, no leaks, I do not have a blinking OD light. I hear the squeal in all gears, moving or parked. The squeal seems more related to engine RPM rather than moving speed.
Any thoughts or advice? Does this sound like one of the bearings in the torque converter has died?
Thanks in advance!
