95 4.0 to 97 4.0

i was wondering if a 1997 ranger 4.0 and a 1995 ranger 4.0 are the same block and if can i just change over my sensors and intake manifold and and drop it in my truck.

I think you can just swap your external parts over and it should be ok. The only thing I'm not sure about is if the computer changed from OBD I to OBD II. That may have taken place in 1996. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will give you a clear answer shortly. Also, if you do make the switch and ever rebuild the new engine, remember it's a different year and ford has changed just about every internal engine component (blocks, pistons, cranks, cams etc. etc.) in different years of Ranger production.

i don't plan on using the wiring and sensors from that engine so i'll be taking the sensors from my 95 block to the 97 so think i'll be fine with my obd 1 sensors on it and computer.

i know the intake manifold is plastic on the 1997 so i was thinking of using my aluminum intake along with fuel injectors from my 1995.

not completely sure if this is possible tho. wanna know before i buy it

The '95 is already OBD2.

Yes, if you swap your sensors (or simply your upper intake) it'll all bolt up.

Though there is one potential issue...

SOME but by no means all '97 4.0's came with the later crankshaft which has EIGHT flywheel bolts the 95 engine will certainly have the "six bolt" flywheel.

You'll need the flywheel (or flex plate if an auto) appropriate to the engine.

well technically my ranger is a 1994, but i thought since it was made later then september of 94 it's considered a 95. i know for sure that my ranger is obd 1, it has the old obd hook up under the hood. along with the ttb and old dash.

so would that make my truck a 94 even tho it was made past that date?

The 95s are OBD II and have a composite (plastic) upper intake....
Yours should be aluminum on a 94, or any other pre 95 OBD I vehicle, but either will fit.

Your profile says you have a 94 truck, but you are referring to a 95 engine as OBD I, which isnt correct...do you have a 95 engine currently in it, or is it just a misprint? Please clarify so we can give the appropriate advice...

Either way, if yours is a OBD I, swap everything over as AllenD said and it will work...

Okay, just missed your post....Your truck is a 94 if its OBD I, no way around that. Swap all the original parts on the new block as stated above...

from what you told me i have a 1994. cuz i have the aluminum intake and obd 1.
people told me it was a 95 cuz of the production date. guess they were wrong.

now i'm trying to decide whether to buy a crate engine for $1,700, or this 97 4.0 for $450, it has 89,000 miles.

what do you guys think?
