When I got my 95 there was nothing before the intake manifold so I’m trying to figure out my best bet on what to use. Should I track down a factory piece, one of those cheap looking aftermarket tubes or is there something else out there worth looking at? I’m probably gonna use a cone style filter on it so I can put an isolated deep cycle where the factory air box would have been to use for my winch and lights.

are you making a snorkel?

you can definitely have issues outside of the oem intake. there are several to use though i suggest to start with a 95 base tube and air meter and carefully plumb out from there. at least try to run it so you are getting the coolest air possible. you can use dryer ducting ect if your limited in resources.

seen this used in some jeeb applications and zip tied to aluminum strap for bend memory. dont have any pics but seemed to work well.

I wasn’t planning on a snorkel, just a cone filter on the end of the factory/ aftermarket tube. Seemed like the couple aftermarket ones I saw didn’t have great reviews and just looked cheap

i prefer the factory airbox and filter setup with these engines. my current setup in the bronco 2 has a 96 box and air meter iirc laid 90 over so its pulling air from the top of the hood.

its working ok and not having any rpm load/spark knock issues with that arrangement so i just leave it ride.

if your not in goo all the time or over bumper deep water then doing as you plan will be ok for most cases.

airflow through the meter otoh can be a tuning issue. try it and see what happens... if its fine its fine....if it gets cantankerous...you will have to play around a bit till its happy.

You'll have a tough time finding an OEM style intake anywhere but a junkyard. I was given the same advice regarding avoiding aftermarket stuff.

I believe you should be able to pull one from a 93-97 4.0 for an exact match. I've heard that the later model (98-01) should fit as well, but i haven't found enough in my area to actually do a comparison.

Unfortunately I’m not seeing much around me, I see a couple on eBay but dang they’re not cheap. $80-$90
Guess I’ll need to take a trip to a parts yard soon to see what if anything they have.

Yea, hopefully you have a junkyard near you to dig through. I believe you can find them on the explorer 4.0s of that era too.

Well, got a tube off eBay for the right year supposedly. But the filter end is way too big for the MAF sensor I was given. Unfortunately when I bought my truck none of it was there so I don’t know what it all looked like. Any one have any pics of their 95-95 4.0? Seems like every time I think I’m making progress I ll taking a step back

I have lots of pics of my "94 4.0L. If I don't have the area you're interested in, I can take some.
94 and 95 should be identical. Let me know what your want.

Here's some pics of my 94

Need anything more specific?

Unfortunately 95 is different. My air filter sits right behind the header panel, where yours is mine has its radiator overflow and washer fluid tanks. The pic I’ve see of a 95 seems like the MAF sits inside a housing which connects to the intake tube?

ell...something's not right. Maybe you could post a pic of yours. I can't find any references to what you are describing until they switched to SOHC in '98.
Thanks.

Pics of mine won’t do much good, other than seeing the fluid tanks are different. But a little google search and I found a solution, hopefull, here actually. Not my picture but the same hose setup I have and that is stock for a 95. Now to find the MAF adapter to fit the hose

Okay. Got it. Looks like someone, maybe the PO, just removed the standard air box and modified the air intake tube.
I've read that those types of air filters can cause problems with the MAF because of oil residue used to coat the filter. Not sure what type you have though.

I don’t have any filter yet. I planned on some form of cone filter so I could put an isolated deep cycle battery where the factory air box was. Looking at several pictures though maybe I still got a wrong intake tube or the MAF sensor I have isn’t for my truck. Some pics had the tube connected to an air box but others were right to the MAF sensor aluminum body. The tube I have is much too large to fit the sensor
