Rebuilding my tranny and was wondering if anyone knows if the output/main shaft is the same in 4x2 and 4x4.

I have a 4.0 supercab 4x4. The reason I ask is because I have seen listings on ebay that say 4x2, but then I see ones that aren't specific and I can't find anything online that says if they are the same or different.:icon_confused:

Basically, other than the rear housing, is the tranny the same between 4x4 and 4x2?

No. The guts are really really similar, until you get to the output shaft. The output shafts are different lengths.

Ok, yeah I just saw that there are 3 different output shafts!? What is up with ford??

Anyways, I also noticed the first 3 gears are lower in all engines except the 4.0. Since I'm rebuilding the tranny, couldn't I swap the first 3 gears and the cluster gear shaft from a 3.0 tranny??

yes, you could.

So, is there some logical reason ford didn't keep the lower gears in 4.0? Would there be a disadvantage to going with the lower gears?

Any clue as to what the difference in mpg and power would be? 1st gear 3.40 to 3.72, 2nd gear 2.05 to 2.20, 3rd gear 1.31 to 1.50.

Would it be similar as going from 3.73 to 4.10 in axle? I wouldn't want to lose a lot of mpg for a little power increase. But if it's minimal....

I can't imagine that you'd lose as much as you did to your lift kit. The engineers will do things to save tenths of a gallon because unlike us they get to multiply that savings over millions of vehicles.

the 4x4 output is also smaller in diameter .
