M5OD-R2 Output Shaft Chg

I'm doing a 302 swap and trying to find a R2 to put in it. I'm afraid that I'm only going to find 4WD +97 R2s around here. Can I chg the output shaft and housing from -96 to put in my 2WD so the shifter location matches up? Or is there a shifter conversion to put the shifter in the correct place? Or I heard that I can chg the top plate from the late R2 to the late R2 to put the shifter in the correct position. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
