Hi all I have been combing thru the site for info on this and have seen a few similar issues but no real conclusions as to what it may be.
I have a 94 Ranger 2wd 4.0 that the transmission has decided to ruin my weekend and keep me from being able to work.
Brief story: Over the last month, 4 maybe 5 times when going up a incline in O/D the tach would show that the engine was running 1000-1200 RPM's higher than normal. Let off the throttle and gently accelerate again and it would not do it for several hundred miles. At the same time this started happening many times when coming to a dead stop, after 3-5 seconds you would feel a thud like you do when shifting into gear. I think it was not downshifting properly and after a pause it would go back to first.
Now where it really stumps me is one day the light turned green and the truck would not move forward at all. I managed to get it to take off in 2nd so I could get out of the intersection and had to rev to 3500 rpms to do that. Got it in a lot and checked fluid, burnt. Let cool for 15 mins and was able to take off in D like normal but it never went into O/D while limping it home. About halfway I had to just stay in 2nd as it was either slipping or not properly engaging 3rd. Now if you put it in D it will never shift out of 1st. Take off with shifter in 1st and manually shift to 2nd and its fine. Put it back in D and its slip city.
The fluid is toast. I really don't want to waste $$ on fluid and filter if the tranny is shot as I will just replace it but if there is a slim chance that maybe because O/D was slipping that the fluid just can't do it's job due to contamination and/or the filter is clogged.. Oh, reverse. Sometimes its there, others its not and when it is you have to rev it to get it to move.
Sorry for length. Anyone got some advice? I really am in a bind and having to work out of my Pathfinder isn't working very well.
TIA
Steve
