My old '90 4.0 4X4 Ranger was having shifting issues that forcasted failure of the A4LD in the near future. Some months ago, a friend had his '92 Explorer come to a untimely end to when a fuel leak resulted in a fire in the engine compartment. His truck was running and shifting just fine at the time of the fire and the transmission was unaffected. That tranny had a full rebuild about 8 months before using the new design upgrade parts for the A4LD.
I made a deal with him for that A4LD transmission and transfer case and pulled it about four months ago to have it on hand to replace mine. I finally got around to swapping them this week. It appeared to be a one for one swap and went without a hitch. We have everything buttoned back up but there is no joy. No motion at all, forward - reverse - nada. Dash indications for 4X4 and "low" are seemingly correct. Fluid level is correct and clean as a new.
Can anyone offer suggestions as to what we obviously missed? It's hard to believe that the donor transmission went bad sitting on my shop floor.
